Before the Sapphire Throne: A Prayer in Awe of the Glory of the LORD

"And above the firmament that [was] over their heads [was] the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne [was] the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so [was] the appearance of the brightness round about. This [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake." - Ezekiel 1:26-28

As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so [was] the appearance of the brightness round about. This [was] the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw [it], I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake." - Ezekiel 1:{verse.verse_number}

Most holy LORD God Almighty,

I come before Thee with trembling reverence, drawn by the wonder of Thy revealed glory. Thy word declares, “And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone.” Lord, my heart is small before such holiness. Lift my eyes above the noise of this world and above the shifting clouds of my fears, that I may behold by faith the steadfastness of Thy throne. Let the “appearance of a sapphire stone” remind me that Thy reign is pure, unchanging, and radiant, and that Thy authority is not threatened by the storms that surround me.

And, O LORD, Thy word continues: “and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.” I worship Thee for drawing near, for revealing Thyself in a way that I can behold and not be consumed. Teach me to honor Thy majesty and also to trust Thy nearness. When I feel unseen, remind me that Thou art not distant. When I feel powerless, remind me that Thou art enthroned. When I forget who governs history and my days, bring me back to the vision of the throne above the firmament, where all things are held together by Thy sovereign hand.

LORD, Ezekiel testified, “And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it.” I confess that I often treat sin lightly and purity casually. Yet Thy glory is not dim; it is blazing. Let the “appearance of fire” search me and cleanse me. Burn away pride, secret compromise, bitterness, and unbelief. Purify my motives, my speech, my desires, and my inward thoughts. Make my life an offering that does not resist Thy holiness but yields to it. Let the fire of Thy presence refine rather than destroy, and grant me repentance that is honest, deep, and complete.

Thy word says again: “from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.” O God of light, surround me with Thy brightness. Where my mind is confused, be my clarity. Where my heart is heavy, be my joy. Where I am tempted to hide, draw me into Thy light, for in Thee is no darkness at all. Let Thy brightness round about be a guard over my eyes, my ears, and my steps. Keep me from paths that lead to death, and lead me in the way everlasting.

And LORD, as Thy prophet declared, “As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about.” I bless Thee for mercy that shines through judgment, and for covenant faithfulness that endures through the rain. When my life is marked by weeping, let me not forget the bow in the cloud. When consequences press upon me, remind me that Thou art gracious and true, and that Thy mercies are not exhausted. Place hope within me that does not rest on circumstances, but on the faithful character of the LORD.

For Thy word concludes: “This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.” I adore Thee for Thy glory—weighty, beautiful, and beyond my full understanding. Let Thy glory reorder my priorities. Make Thy presence more precious to me than comfort, more compelling than approval, more satisfying than success. Teach me to live for what is eternal, not for what is passing.

And as Ezekiel confessed, “And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.” LORD, I also fall low in spirit before Thee. Silence my striving. Humble my self-reliance. Make worship the posture of my life. And as I bow, let me also listen. Speak, LORD, for Thy servant heareth. Give me ears to hear Thy voice in Thy word, courage to obey what Thou commandest, and faith to follow where Thou leadest.

Let the vision of Thy throne steady me, the fire of Thy holiness cleanse me, the brightness of Thy glory guide me, and the bow of Thy mercy comfort me. I yield myself to Thee—mind, body, and soul—asking that my life would reflect, however faintly, the “appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.”

In reverence and trust, I pray. Amen.
