A Prayer Against Pride and Idolatry: Reflections on Ezekiel 29:3
“Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.” — Ezekiel 29:3
O Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, we come before You today with earnest hearts, seeking Your guidance and illumination as we meditate upon Your holy Word. As we reflect on the profound message found in Ezekiel 29:3, we are reminded of Your sovereignty over all nations and authorities, and how You are against all that rises in pride and self-exaltation.
Holy Father, we echo the words spoken by the prophet Ezekiel, declaring, "Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers!" How often do the powerful of this world, like Pharaoh, believe within their hearts that they are invincible, claiming ownership over all they possess! They proclaim, "My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself," forgetting that all things ultimately belong to You, O God. You are the source of life, the giver of every good gift. No one can boast of their achievements or possessions for they are merely stewards of what has been divinely entrusted to them.
Lord, we ask for forgiveness for the times we, too, have had the spirit of Pharaoh within us, taking pride in our accomplishments and forgetting that it is You who gives us the strength to labor and the wisdom to succeed. We confess, as a people, that we have at times allowed the pride of life to blind us from seeing Your glory and our need for Your grace. We grieve for those who, like Pharaoh, have hardened their hearts against You, believing their power and their riches are their own. In humility, we plead for Your mercy upon them.
Father, we pray that You would reach into the hearts of world leaders, influencers, and all who hold positions of authority. Break down their walls of pride and self-sufficiency, revealing to them their utter dependence on You. May they recognize that it is not by their might or their wisdom that they reign, but by Your divine decree. Let them see the folly of claiming ownership over their dominions and resources, understanding instead that they are custodians of Your creation.
We lift up our own lives, O Lord. Help us to not be deceived by arrogance or the deceitfulness of riches. Lead us away from the temptation of believing we are self-made individuals, fashioned by our own hands. Instead, instill in us a spirit of gratitude and humility, that we may acknowledge and celebrate Your goodness and provision in our lives.
As we meditate on this scripture, we are reminded of the great danger that comes with idolatry—the worship of the created rather than the Creator. Just as Pharaoh exalted himself as a god, we too can fall into the trap of elevating our desires, our ambitions, or even our possessions above You. O Lord, purge from us any inclination to idolize anything other than You. Clear our hearts and minds of distractions, and ignite within us a singular passion for Your glory.
God, we pray for nations that are wrapped in pride, believing their successes are their own making. Help them to recognize the dangers of this mindset. May Your voice penetrate through the noise of arrogance and arrogance, humbling the proud and challenging the complacent.
In the wake of this prayer, Lord God, we declare our dependence upon You, the ultimate ruler of all creation. Let our lives reflect the truth that every river flows from You, and every blessing is a gift from the One who knows what we need. Help us to align our hearts with Yours, keeping our eyes upon the eternal rather than the transient.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
