A Prayer for Shepherds and the Lost Sheep
"Because ye have thrust with side and with shoulder, and pushed all the diseased with your horns, till ye have scattered them abroad;" - Ezekiel 34:21

O Lord, the Great Shepherd of our souls,
We come before You today with hearts full of humility and contrition, standing in the gap for the broken and the scattered. We reflect deeply on the words of Ezekiel 34:21: "Because ye have thrust with side and with shoulder, and pushed all the diseased with your horns, till ye have scattered them abroad." These powerful words echo throughout the ages, revealing the devastation that occurs when those who are called to lead and protect instead become aggressors, neglecting their sacred duty to care for the vulnerable among us.
Father, we ask for your forgiveness for the times we have failed in our roles as shepherds—whether in our families, communities, or places of leadership. We acknowledge the moments when we have thrust with our own shoulders against those who are weak, using our strength to dominate rather than to support and uplift. We recognize the sorrow and pain we have caused by letting ambition and pride lead us, pushing away those who are struggling and sick, neglecting the call to love and serve with compassion.
Lord, we lament over the lost sheep in our midst—those who have been pushed aside and scattered due to misguidance, neglect, or outright abuse by those who were meant to guide them along the right path. We pray for the broken, the wounded, and the diseased; those who have suffered at the hands of unkind words, harsh judgments, and unyielding hearts. We ask that You would mend their wounds and bring healing where there is pain.
We seek Your wisdom, O God, to transform our hearts and actions; to instill within us a spirit of gentleness and a compassionate approach to leadership. Teach us to be true shepherds, embodying a heart that reflects Your love and care. Help us steer away from divisive actions that thrust others away and instead cultivate unity and understanding among those we lead.
Lord, guide us to recognize the importance of each individual in our community. Each one is a creation of Yours, valuable and worthy of love, care, and attention. Let us not increase the divide between us, but rather bridge the gaps and restore relationships. May our hearts be sensitive to those who are suffering, so that we may approach them with grace and mercy, not with horns that push them away but with hands that help them stand.
We ask You, Holy Spirit, to open our eyes to the pain around us. Allow us to see as You see, to feel the weight of burdens that others carry, and to respond with the love that You have shown to us. Let us be the voice of comfort to the weary, the protector of the innocent, and the guide for the lost. Make our hearts resonate with Your heart, that we may seek justice and mercy in our interactions.
We pray for those in positions of authority and leadership, Lord. Surround them with wisdom and discernment, so that they may lead with integrity and humility. Help them to remember that with position comes responsibility to serve rather than to dominate. May they be examples of care and commitment to those who look to them for guidance.
Help us all to work towards a community where people are not thrust aside, but welcomed with open arms. Where the diseased are nurtured and provided for, wherein no one feels scattered, but are bound together by love and compassion.
In closing, Lord, we submit this prayer to You, asking for the continual renewal of our hearts to be shepherds after Your own heart. May we strive to embody Your compassion and love in everything we do, nurturing and tending to those You've entrusted in our care.
In Jesus’ Name, we pray, Amen.
