A Prayer for Shepherds and the Flock
"Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock." - Ezekiel 34:3

Heavenly Father, Creator of all, in the stillness of this moment, I come before You with a heart yearning for Your guidance and grace. Today, I reflect on the profound words of Ezekiel 34:3, where the scripture declares, "Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock." Lord, these words resonate deeply with the state of our world and the responsibilities placed upon us as stewards of Your creation.
Gracious God, I beseech You to instill in us the spirit of true shepherds, those who understand the weight of our responsibilities to each other and to those whom You’ve entrusted to our care. Help us recognize the contrast presented in this verse. This passage serves as a stern warning against self-serving leaders who indulge in their desires while neglecting the needs of the vulnerable and the lost. We see too often in our communities and societies, those in positions of power satisfying their own greed and ambition at the expense of those who rely on their guidance and support.
Father, open our eyes, that we may see beyond our immediate comforts and material gains. Grant us the insight to recognize when we are consuming the fat and cloaking ourselves in wool from what ought to sustain the least among us. Let us not be those who kill and consume while failing to nourish the very souls that look to us for sustenance. Teach us the essence of true leadership, which mirrors Your infinite love and compassion.
Lord, we confess that at times we have fallen into the trap of complacency. We have allowed our roles in our families, communities, and churches to become about our own needs rather than the well-being of others. Forgive us for moments when we have acted like hired hands, removing ourselves from the responsibility You have called us to. Forgive us for not feeding the flock, for neglecting our duty to shepherd those who are lost, hungry, and in need of spiritual nourishment.
As we grapple with our transgressions, instill in us a renewed passion to feed the flock You have placed in our midst. Help us to see every individual as a precious creation of Yours, deserving love, care, and guidance. May we prioritize their needs above our own desires, demonstrating the selfless nature of Christ in all that we do. May we seek to serve with humility, compassion, and diligence.
Father, I pray for our leaders—both secular and spiritual. Enlighten them with wisdom and a servant-hearted spirit. Let them stand resolutely against the enticing temptations of power and prestige that threaten to corrupt their purpose. May they be shepherds who model Your heart, dedicated to nurturing their flocks and ensuring that no one goes hungry in spirit or in body.
Lord, I also lift up those who find themselves in positions of vulnerability, who are often the overlooked and marginalized. May Your Spirit comfort them and empower them to seek their true Shepherd, who is You. Lead them to find hope and provision in unexpected places. Bring them shepherds who truly care and represent Your heart, those who labor tirelessly to meet their needs.
Finally, Lord, I ask that You stir within us a desire to serve one another actively and intentionally. May we remember that to feed the flock is not merely a task; it is a calling to live out the love of Christ daily in our interactions, our communities, and our world. Help us to band together, to carry each other’s burdens, and to nurture a spirit of fellowship that ripples outwards into all corners of society.
In the precious name of Jesus, the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep, I pray. Amen.
