A Prayer for Humility and Repentance
"Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them." - Ezekiel 35:13

O Lord God, the Almighty Creator, whose reign stretches beyond the heavens, we approach your throne of grace today with reverent hearts, mindful of the weight of your word as written in Ezekiel 35:13, "Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard them."
We bow before you, recognizing that we live in a world filled with noise—noise of pride, boastfulness, and claims that elevate human wisdom and strength above your glorious sovereignty. Lord, we confess that too often, we have allowed arrogance to cloud our judgment and have joined in the chorus of those who boast against you.
In our quest for recognition and status, we have belittled your name with our words. Forgive us, O God, for every careless word spoken, every boastful proclamation of our own strength, our possessions, and our achievements, as if we exist independently of your grace and mercy. Help us, Lord, to see that every good gift comes from you, and that without you, we are utterly and completely barren.
Father, we beg for your mercy as we reflect upon our actions. It is so easy to become ensnared in the traps of this world, to be swept away by the allure of power and pride. We have multiplied our words against you, whispering doubts in our hearts and shouting complaints in public spaces, convincing ourselves of our own righteousness while we displace your truth. We have grumbled in the face of your provision and marveled at our own understanding, forgetting that all wisdom is found in you.
We come before you in humility, seeking to undo the damage done by our unruly tongues. For your words are true and powerful, cutting through to the very heart of our motivations and desires. We ask you to examine our hearts and cleanse us of our iniquities, for by our words, we have often erected barriers between ourselves and your perfect holiness.
Lord, restore in us a posture of humility. Teach us to be slow to speak and quick to listen, as you desired of your children. May we find joy in praising you, remembering that our strength is found not in ourselves but solely in our relationship with you.
In a culture that celebrates the lofty and proud, may we be countercultural in our devotion to meekness and service. Let our lives be a testimony of humility that echoes your greatness, drawing others towards your light rather than our darkened self-interest.
We pray for those who still persist in boasting against you, who cling to their arrogance. Lord, intervene in their lives, soften their hearts, and open their eyes to the truth of your words. May they hear the gentle call to repentance and embrace the grace that you offer freely to all who seek your face.
Let our hearts rejoice in the knowledge that you hear every word; that you are not distant or indifferent to our praise and our complaints. We find comfort in the truth that you are ever-present, listening intently to our cries, be they of joy or grievance. Help us to articulate our thoughts in a way that glorifies your name and magnifies your mercy.
In all things, O Lord, may we learn that our words have power. May they build up rather than tear down, inspire rather than discourage, unite rather than divide. As we journey through life, imbue our speech with your love, a reflection of your grace that draws others into a relationship with you.
In the name of Jesus, our Savior, we declare our intentions to reverently honor you with our mouth and our hearts. We seek to glorify you in all that we do and say, trusting that you will guide us away from boasting towards an authentic acknowledgment of our dependence on You. Amen.
