A Prayer for Guidance and Protection

"¶ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance." - Ezra 8:21

"¶ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance." - Ezra 8:{verse.verse_number}

O Lord God of Heaven and Earth,

We come to You today with humble hearts, just as Ezra proclaimed a fast by the river of Ahava. As we bow before Your holy presence, we seek to afflict our souls and turn our minds toward You. In this moment, we reflect upon Ezra 8:21, which says, "Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance."

Heavenly Father, as we gather in prayer, we recognize the weight of what it means to afflict our souls. We set aside our comforts and our indulgences in order to draw closer to You. Let our fast be a genuine expression of our desire to know Your will and to receive Your guidance in our lives. We live in a world full of distractions and uncertainties, but You are our cornerstone, our firm foundation. In our times of fasting and prayer, we seek not only to humble ourselves but also to find clarity and direction in our journey of faith.

Lord, we come before You with the intention of seeking the right way. Just as Ezra led the people of Israel to seek Your direction, we too desire Your wisdom to navigate the journeys we face. Grant us discernment, O God, to understand Your plans for us as individuals and as families. Teach us to listen intently to Your voice amid the noise of this world. Help us to recognize the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit guiding us toward righteousness and truth.

As we lift our prayers to You, we place our families before You. We think of our little ones, our children who are so precious to us, and we ask for Your divine protection over their lives. Shield them from harm and keep them under Your watchful gaze. May they grow in the knowledge of You and Your ways. Instill in them a heart that yearns to seek Your guidance for their future, just as we seek it for ourselves. Lord, raise up a generation that desires to walk in Your paths, and fill them with the strength to resist temptation as they grow in grace and truth.

Father, we also bring before You our substance—all that we hold dear, our homes, our resources, our livelihoods. We acknowledge that every good and perfect gift comes from You. Help us to manage our resources wisely, recognizing that prosperity comes from Your hand, not just our efforts. We pray for Your blessings upon our endeavors and that You would give us a right perspective on the use of the gifts that You have entrusted to us.

In moments of uncertainty, we ask for Your peace to fill our hearts. Help us to trust in Your providence, knowing that You care for us deeply. May we lean on You for strength and courage during trials, understanding that You are our refuge and fortress. Remind us that even when the path is unclear, You are the light that guides our feet.

We confess, O God, that at times we have sought our own paths rather than Yours. We repent of our ways and turn back to You, asking for forgiveness. Cleanse our hearts, renew our minds, and set us back on the right path, that we may honor You in all that we do.

As Ezra and the people fasted to seek Your favor and guidance, so we too lay our lives before You in prayer and fasting. Lead us, Lord, for it is by Your mercy and grace that we stand. We ask all of these things in the holy and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Amen.
