A Prayer of Repentance and Surrender
"¶ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God," - Ezra 9:5

O Sovereign Lord, the Almighty God of heaven and earth, I come before You in humility and reverence, reflecting upon the powerful words written in Ezra 9:5: "And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God."
Heavenly Father, I approach Your throne today with a heart heavy with the burdens of this world. Just as Ezra arose from his heaviness, I also seek to lift my spirit from the weight of sin and sorrow that presses down upon me. Lord, the worries and fears of life often feel consuming, and I ask that You lighten my load. Help me to lay these worries at Your feet, for I know that You care for me beyond what I can even comprehend.
As I reflect on the act of rending garments, I remember the significance of this gesture—a powerful symbol of mourning and repentance. Lord, I acknowledge the times I have strayed from Your path, the moments I have succumbed to temptation, and the actions I have taken that do not align with Your will. I confess the sins of my heart and my hands; forgive me, O Lord, for I have faltered in my commitment to Your commands.
In this moment of stillness, I, too, take a moment to figuratively rend my heart before You. This day, I strip away my pride, my self-righteousness, and any façade that keeps me from being wholly honest in Your presence. I fall upon my knees in solemn acknowledgment of Your holiness and my own vulnerability. Teach me, Lord, to not only recognize my faults but to truly repent of them, turning away from the wrong and turning my heart towards You, who is the source of grace and renewal.
As Ezra spread out his hands in prayer, I too lift my hands to You, Father. I stretch out these hands toward heaven, acknowledging that I am nothing without You. I place my burdens, my joys, my gratitude, my requests, and my despair in Your capable hands. I ask that as I approach You in prayer, You might fill me with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Help me to feel the weight lift as I surrender all to You.
Lord, grant me the strength to arise from my heaviness. Though life brings inevitable struggles, I find hope in the promise that I can find restoration in You. May the evening sacrifice symbolize not only a point of reflection but a bold declaration of faith. Just as Ezra found the strength to rise again, inspire me to do the same. May my sacrifices—a humble heart, a repentant spirit, a dedication to serve—be pleasing in Your sight.
Teach me, Heavenly Father, to embrace the posture of prayer. Help me to fall to my knees daily, speaking with You, listening for Your guidance, and seeking Your will above all else. As I spread out my hands in prayer, may I also, metaphorically, spread out the worries of my life, trusting You to intercede and act in ways that I may not understand.
Finally, I surrender my life to You, Lord. I yield my ambitions, my timeline, my plans, and my desires, knowing that Your plans are far greater. I trust that in You, there is healing, hope, and a future full of promise.
In the name of Jesus Christ, my Savior and Redeemer, I pray, Amen.
