Breaking Up Fallow Ground: A Prayer to Sow in Righteousness and Reap in Mercy
"Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you." - Hosea 10:12

Most Holy and Righteous Father, the Lord of heaven and earth, I come before Thee with reverence and a yielded heart. I thank Thee that Thy Word is living and true, and that it searches me more deeply than I can search myself. Today I cling to Thy counsel in Hosea 10:12, for Thou hast spoken plainly and tenderly unto us: “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” Lord, let this Word not merely pass through my mind, but pierce my heart, shape my choices, and govern my steps.
Father, I confess that there are places in me that have grown hard and unattended. There are habits I have allowed to settle, attitudes I have excused, and fears I have watered until they became weeds. Thou knowest the hidden corners—where pride resists correction, where bitterness lingers, where unbelief makes me slow to obey. By Thy mercy, shine Thy light upon the “fallow ground” of my soul. Teach me to recognize what has become unplowed through neglect: prayer that has grown cold, worship that has become routine, love that has become selective, and obedience that has become delayed. Lord, I do not want to remain uncultivated; I ask Thee to break up my fallow ground.
Yet, Father, I acknowledge that I cannot break it up by mere willpower. I need Thy hand. I ask that the Holy Ghost would convict me with godly sorrow and lead me into true repentance. Put Thy plow to the hardened places within me. Break through my stubbornness. Uproot what should not remain. Where I have settled into complacency, shake me awake. Where I have been content to look righteous outwardly, yet live divided inwardly, cleanse me and make me whole. Teach me to humble myself quickly, to forgive freely, and to be corrected without defensiveness. Make my heart soft again—quick to hear Thy voice and ready to respond.
Lord, Thy Word commands: “Sow to yourselves in righteousness.” Help me to sow righteous seed in the quiet places where no one sees. Let my thoughts be sown in purity, my words in gentleness and truth, my actions in integrity, and my motives in love. Keep me from sowing to the flesh—keep me from planting seeds of envy, harshness, lust, deceit, and self-exaltation. Teach me to sow righteousness in my home, in my friendships, in my work, and in my church. Let me sow faithfulness when I feel weary, patience when I feel rushed, compassion when I feel indifferent, and courage when I feel afraid. Make me diligent in good works, not to be seen of men, but because Thou art worthy.
And as I sow, Lord, I look to Thy promise: “reap in mercy.” I confess that I do not deserve Thy mercy, yet I need it every hour. When I have failed, show me mercy and restore me. When I have been wounded, give me mercy to heal. When I have sinned, grant me mercy to repent. When I face consequences, meet me with mercy that teaches me wisdom. Let my life be marked not by what I have earned, but by what Thou hast freely given. And as Thou hast shown mercy unto me, teach me to reap mercy by extending mercy—slow to anger, ready to reconcile, eager to lift burdens, quick to pray for those who wrong me. Make me a vessel through which Thy mercy flows to others.
Father, Thy Word declares: “for it is time to seek the LORD.” I confess that I have sometimes sought comfort more than Thee, answers more than Thee, gifts more than Thee. But now, Lord, I turn my heart toward Thee. I seek Thy face, not as a passing thought, but as my chief pursuit. I seek Thee in prayer, in Thy Word, in quietness, and in obedience. I seek Thee when I understand and when I do not. I seek Thee early and I seek Thee often. Teach me to order my days so that seeking Thee is not an afterthought but the foundation.
And Lord, I hear the words: “till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” I ask Thee to come near unto me; visit me with renewed devotion and holy desire. Rain righteousness upon my mind—wash away what is unclean. Rain righteousness upon my heart—heal what is broken. Rain righteousness upon my mouth—set a watch that I may speak life and truth. Rain righteousness upon my hands—strengthen me to do what is right. Rain righteousness upon my family—bring peace, purity, and unity. Rain righteousness upon Thy people—revive us from lukewarmness and restore our first love. Rain righteousness upon our land—turn hearts back to Thee, expose evil, and raise up justice and mercy.
Lord, keep me steadfast “till he come.” Let me not grow weary in well doing. Keep me from returning to the hardened ground again. Teach me daily to cultivate my heart with prayer, to weed it with repentance, and to water it with Thy Word. And when the harvest comes, let it be evident that it was Thy grace that caused it to grow.
I surrender myself to Thee, Lord. I choose to sow to myself in righteousness. I ask to reap in mercy. I ask Thee to break up my fallow ground. I confess that it is time to seek the LORD. And I wait upon Thee in faith, “till he come and rain righteousness upon you.”
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
