“Light Breaking Forth as the Morning”: A Prayer from Isaiah 58:8

"¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward." - Isaiah 58:8

"¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward." - Isaiah 58:{verse.verse_number}

O LORD God Almighty, Holy and True, I come before Thee with reverence and with hope, lifting my heart unto Thee and resting my faith upon Thy living word. Thou art the One who formed the morning and commanded the day, and Thou art the One who speaks light into the darkest places of a soul. I thank Thee that Thou dost not leave Thy people in shadow, nor abandon those who wait upon Thee. I bless Thy name, for Thy promises are sure, and Thy counsel shall stand.

Father, I bring before Thee this word of promise from Isaiah, written for the comfort and correction of Thy people. Thou hast said, “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.” LORD, I hold to this word, not as a mere saying, but as Thy faithful declaration. Let it be unto me according to Thy word.

O God, cause my light to break forth as the morning. Where there has been confusion, let there be clarity. Where there has been heaviness, let there be joy. Where there has been fear, let there be holy courage rooted in trust in Thee. If I have sat too long in discouragement, if I have accepted dimness as though it were my portion, forgive me, LORD, and awaken me again to the brightness of Thy presence. Shine through every corner of my life—my thoughts, my words, my relationships, my work, and my secret places. Let the light that breaks forth not be my own vain glory, but the evidence of Thy mercy and the fruit of obedience. Teach me to walk as a child of light, to speak truth, to love mercy, and to do justly in Thy sight.

And, O Lord, I plead Thy promise: “and thine health shall spring forth speedily.” Thou knowest the frailty of my body and the weariness that can rest upon my mind. Thou knowest the wounds I carry—those seen and those hidden. Stretch forth Thy hand, for Thou art the Great Physician. Restore what has been weakened; renew what has been drained; strengthen what has been broken. Let health spring forth speedily according to Thy will—health of body, steadiness of mind, and wholeness of spirit. Where there is sickness, grant healing; where there is anxiety, grant peace; where there is exhaustion, grant rest that is deep and holy. Teach me also to honor Thee with wise choices, with temperance, and with gratitude, that I may not despise the vessel Thou hast given, but present it unto Thee for Thy service.

Thou hast also said, “and thy righteousness shall go before thee.” LORD, I confess that I cannot establish righteousness by my own strength. Lead me in the path of righteousness for Thy name’s sake. Let uprightness go before me like a guide, preparing my steps and ordering my way. Keep me from stumbling into temptation; keep me from hidden pride and secret sin. Let integrity speak before I speak; let purity stand before I act; let humility guard me from my own self-will. Make me quick to repent, quick to forgive, and quick to obey. Let my life be marked by honesty, compassion, and steadfastness, that others may see not my goodness, but Thy work within me.

And, LORD, I cling to this final comfort: “the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.” Be Thou my rear guard. Stand behind me where I cannot see, where dangers may rise, where accusations may follow, and where regrets may attempt to overtake me. Let Thy glory cover my past, protect my present, and secure my future. If I am pursued by shame, let Thy glory be my defense. If I am surrounded by spiritual warfare, let Thy glory be my shield. If I must walk through uncertain days, let Thy glory be my confidence. Teach me to trust that the same God who goes before me with righteousness also watches behind me with glory.

Now, LORD, make this promise living in me. Let my life testify that Thy word is true: that light can break forth as the morning, that health can spring forth speedily, that righteousness can go before, and that Thy glory can be my rereward. I yield myself to Thee anew. Purge me, guide me, strengthen me, and use me. Let every blessing lead me into deeper obedience, and let every trial lead me into deeper trust.

I ask all these things with thanksgiving and with a bowed heart before Thee, for Thou alone art worthy. Amen.
