A Prayer of Surrender to God’s Will
"Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.'" - James 4:13-15

Heavenly Father,
I come before You today with a heart full of reflection and humility. As I ponder upon the profound wisdom found in the book of James, particularly James 4:13-15, I am reminded of my own fleeting existence and the plans I often make without consulting You. Your Word speaks to me, saying, "Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.'"
Lord, I acknowledge that in my human nature, I am prone to plan and scheme, to envision my future with certainty and control. I confess that I sometimes forget that You alone know my days and what lies ahead. The hustle and bustle of daily life can cloud my mind, causing me to focus on material success and achievements. Forgive me, Lord, for each time I have placed my trust in my own plans rather than in Your divine wisdom. Help me to understand that mere mortals like me cannot predict even the next moment much less the tomorrows ahead.
As I reflect on the imagery of life as a mist, I am struck by its fragility and brevity. It brings to mind the many times I have taken for granted the precious moments You have given me. I ask that You instill in my heart a sense of urgency and purpose, one that prioritizes the things that truly matter—my relationship with You, my family, and my friends. Let my life be a testament of Your kindness and love, rather than just a fleeting existence.
Help me, dear Lord, to approach my plans with an open heart, ready to submit to Your will. Teach me to say, "If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that." May I approach the future with a spirit of surrender, knowing that Your plans are better than my own. Remind me to seek Your guidance in every decision, big or small. Enable me to pray earnestly before I embark on any endeavor, asking, "Is this Your will for me, Lord?" Let my confidence rest in You, for You hold my future in Your capable hands.
Lord, I long to live with purpose in accordance with Your will. Let me be diligent and hardworking, yet always remembering that You are in control. May I bring my plans before You as offerings, asking for Your blessing and direction. In doing so, help me to release the burden of self-imposed expectations and to find peace in knowing that You go before me.
I pray for wisdom, Lord, and for the discernment to recognize Your divine interventions in my life. Teach me patience and understanding as I wait for Your answers and direction. Let me not be discouraged by setbacks or closed doors, but to see them as part of Your greater plan. Let your Holy Spirit lead me in making choices that honor You and reflect Your desires for my life.
Finally, I thank You for the gift of today, for the breath in my lungs, and for the beauty of each moment. Help me to make the most of the time I have, investing in relationships, sharing love, and spreading Your truth. I place my trust in You, knowing that even in uncertainty, You are my steadfast anchor in the tempest of life.
In Jesus’ powerful name, I pray,
Amen.
