A Prayer for Open Hearts and Ears

"But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction." - Jeremiah 17:23

"But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction." - Jeremiah 17:{verse.verse_number}

O Great and Merciful God,

As I come before You today, I am reminded of the profound words found in Jeremiah 17:23: "But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.” With a humble heart, I acknowledge the gravity of this scripture and the truth it reveals about the human condition. How often, Lord, have we, like those spoken of in this verse, turned our ears from Your guidance and instructions, choosing instead the stubborn path of our own making?

Father, I recognize the times in my life when I have stiffened my neck against the wisdom that You offer. I have allowed pride to cloud my judgment and my willingness to listen to You. Just as the people in Jeremiah’s time neglected Your voice, I too have been guilty of ignoring the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit guiding me towards righteousness. I have allowed distractions to drown out Your still, small voice and have been stubborn in my ways. Forgive me, Lord, for my unwillingness to submit to Your instruction.

Lord, I pray today for a spirit of humility and receptiveness. Help me to cast aside my pride and acknowledge that Your ways are higher than my ways and Your thoughts greater than my thoughts. I request that You would soften my hardened heart, Lord. So often I have been like the people of Israel, turning away from You in my rebellion. Cleanse me of this disobedience. Grant me the wisdom to incline my ear to Your voice and to recognize Your hand at work in my life.

I pray not only for myself, O God, but for my family, my friends, and our community. We all stand in need of a heart transformation, a renewed spirit that longs for Your truth. May we, as a collective, learn to listen intently, to open our hearts to the lessons You have placed before us. Help us to turn away from stubbornness and rebellion and to embrace a posture of humility and surrender.

Heavenly Father, in this world filled with noise and distractions, help us to create sacred spaces in our lives where we can hear You clearly. Teach us the discipline of meditation on Your Word, the Bible, so that we may glean knowledge from the wise teachings found within its pages. May we not be like those who turn away from Your counsel but rather strive to be students of Your goodness and love.

I also lift up the leaders of our churches, our nations, and our communities. Lord, guide them with Your wisdom and understanding. May they seek Your voice above all else, and may they lead with integrity and the desire to serve You wholeheartedly. Protect them from the temptations to err and to become stiff-necked in their positions of authority. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, and lead them to seek counsel that reflects Your heart for justice and mercy.

May Your grace abound, dear Lord, in those moments when we falter. Remind us of the promise of Your salvation that is available when we repent and turn back to You. Help us to be vessels of Your grace as we interact with others. Grant us the patience and understanding to listen even when it is challenging, and may our lives reflect the love and instruction You so freely give.

In this prayer, I commit my desire to live according to Your will, not my own. I relinquish my stubbornness and ask for guidance, wisdom, and the strength to endure in faith. Thank You, Lord, for hearing my prayer. May You be glorified through our obedience and willingness to incline our ears and submit our hearts to You today and always.

In the name of Jesus, I pray,

Amen.
