A Prayer for Guidance and Obedience to God’s Ways

"Jeremiah 6:16-17: 16 Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. 17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken." - Jeremiah 6:16-17

"Jeremiah 6:16-17:
16 Thus saith the Lord,
Stand ye in the ways, and see,
and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein,
and ye shall find rest for your souls.
But they said, We will not walk therein.
17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying,
Hearken to the sound of the trumpet.
    But they said, We will not hearken." - Jeremiah 6:{verse.verse_number}

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You today with hearts that long for Your guidance, seeking to embrace the wisdom encapsulated in Your Word. As we reflect on Jeremiah 6:16-17, we find Your voice calling us to a deeper relationship with You: "Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein."

Lord, You have set before us the ancient paths, the good way that promises rest for our souls. We thank You for the clarity of Your direction, for You invite us not just to stand idly but to actively seek. Teach us, O God, to pause amidst the chaos of our lives and stand—stand in prayer, stand in faith, and stand in surrender before You. Help us to see the paths that You have laid out for us, paths that lead to peace and fulfillment.

Forgive us, Lord, as we humbly recognize how often we have turned from Your ways—to our own understanding, our own desires, and the fleeting truths of this world. It is easy to become entangled in distractions and voices that pull us away from Your divine purpose. Help us to desire Your old paths, which remind us of Your timeless truth and everlasting love.

When we consider the declaration, "But they said, We will not walk therein," we are struck by the reality of our stubborn hearts. We confess that at times we have ignored Your call, turned a deaf ear to the wisdom of faithful counsel, and failed to heed the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit. Lord, we often resist walking in the good way, believing it may lead to constraints or sacrifices we are unwilling to make. Yet we know that true freedom, joy, and rest can only be found in surrendering our will to Yours.

Father, help us to be mindful of Your watchmen: those You have placed in our lives to guide us, admonish us, and lead us closer to You. As outlined in verse 17, You have said, "Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken." Forgive us for the times we have disregarded the voices of wisdom, particularly those who have spoken the truth of Your Word to us. Give us discernment to recognize the watchmen in our lives, to listen closely to their guidance and counsel, and to respond with obedience.

May we not be resistant, but instead create a culture of listening and reflecting on their words. Help us cultivate hearts that are tender and receptive to the promptings of Your Holy Spirit, enabling us to say, "We will walk therein." Let us be vessels of encouragement to one another, fostering environments where truth is embraced, and God’s Word reigns supreme in our hearts.

Gracious Lord, deepen our resolve to stand in the ways, to ask for the old paths, and to walk in them. May our communities be revived by this desire to seek Your face, glorifying You in our actions, thoughts, and prayers. May we continually return to Your Word as our guide, and let it light our path.

So we ask, O Lord, to instill in us a longing for Your presence. Draw us closer with each step we take in Your direction, that we may experience the rest of our souls promised in the good way. Help us to boldly proclaim our decision to walk therein, and fill us with Your Spirit to sustain us as we embark on this journey together.

In Jesus’ name, we pray,

Amen.
