A Prayer at Golgotha: Embracing Sacrifice and Love
"And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home." - John 19:17-27

Heavenly Father,
As I bow before You today, my heart is filled with reverence and awe for the profound act of love and sacrifice that took place at Golgotha, as illustrated in the words of John 19:17-27. I come to You with a humble spirit, seeking to reflect on the sacred moments when our Savior bore His cross and endured the pain of crucifixion for our sake. "And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha."
Lord, I acknowledge the weight of that cross, not merely of wood fashioned by human hands but the burden of sin that it bore. Help me to understand and appreciate the magnitude of this sacrifice. Jesus embraced the anguish of those steps toward His destiny, laden with the sins of the world. As I meditate on His journey, I pray for the strength to bear my own crosses with grace and perseverance. Help me to remember that through tribulations, I am not alone—Jesus walked the path of suffering, facing scorn and ridicule so that I might find salvation and hope.
"Where they crucified him," reminds me of the ultimate injustice that transpired on that hill. The agony inflicted not only upon His body but also upon His spirit as He was surrounded by mockery. Lord, I am reminded of the many injustices in my world today. Help me to recognize the suffering of others and to stand up against injustice in the spirit of Your love. May I be a beacon of hope to the oppressed, just as Jesus remained faithful to His mission even in the face of cruelty.
In this moment, I also reflect on the inscription, "JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS," that Pilate wrote. What a powerful proclamation of the truth, standing bold against the false accusations and the disdain from the world. Father, I pray that my life aligns with Your truth, that I may live as a testimony to Your kingship. May Your kingdom come in my heart and in the hearts of those around me as we share the good news of salvation and hope found in Jesus Christ.
As the soldiers divided His garments and cast lots for His coat, I am reminded of the prophecy being fulfilled amid such cruelty. You, O Lord, are sovereign in all things, even in moments that seem chaotic or senseless. Teach me to trust in Your divine plan and purpose, recognizing that there is a greater story unfolding, even when I cannot see it clearly. May I surrender my doubts and fears at the foot of the cross, knowing that You work through all circumstances for good.
As Jesus spoke to His mother, saying, "Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother!" I am struck by the compassion of Christ in His final moments. His care extended beyond His own suffering. When He entrusted Mary to John, He modeled for us the importance of community, support, and love. Lord, instill within me the heart of Jesus. Help me to carry the burdens of others, offering love and compassion to those around me. Grant me the grace to reach out to those who are lonely, broken, or grieving, following the example of Your Son.
I stand at the cross, and I embrace the reality of Your love demonstrated in this ultimate sacrifice. Thank You, Jesus, for Your willingness to endure the cross for my redemption. Ignite in me a fervent love for You and for my neighbors. May my life be a reflection of the love I have received, as I strive to be Your hands and feet in this world.
In the name of Jesus, my Savior and King, I pray. Amen.
