When Thy Billows Pass Over Me: A Prayer from Jonah 2:3 (KJV)

"For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me." - Jonah 2:3

"For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me." - Jonah 2:{verse.verse_number}

Most Holy and Sovereign Lord,

I come before Thee with reverence and with truth, acknowledging that Thou art God over the heights and over the depths, over the calm waters and over the raging seas. Thy hand is not shortened that it cannot save, and Thy eye is not dim that it cannot see. Yet I confess that there are moments when I feel like Jonah in the belly of the storm—moments when I cannot find my footing, when my thoughts are swallowed by fear, and when my heart trembles beneath the weight of what I cannot control.

Thy Word declares in Jonah 2:3, “For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.” Lord, I do not come to argue with Thy Word, but to bow beneath it. Sometimes, in Thy wise providence, Thou dost permit the deep to surround me. Sometimes I find myself “in the midst of the seas,” where I cannot reach the shore by my own strength. Sometimes “the floods” compass me about—pressures, sorrows, consequences, uncertainties, and griefs that seem to close in on every side.

Father, I acknowledge that Thou art not absent in the deep. Even there, Thou art Lord. Even when I feel cast down, I am not cast away from Thy presence. When I cannot see ahead, Thou seest the end from the beginning. When I cannot interpret my pain, Thou understandest it fully and hast numbered my days. Teach me to discern that even the waves that pass over me are not random, for Jonah confessed, “all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.” Lord, if they are Thine, then they have a boundary. If they are Thine, then they serve a purpose that is higher than my understanding.

I ask Thee to grant me humility to repent wherever my steps have wandered. If I have resisted Thy voice, chased my own will, or tried to flee from obedience, bring me to godly sorrow, and lead me into true repentance. If my present distress is the fruit of my own choices, give me courage to confess without excuse, and faith to believe that Thy mercy can reach even to the depths. If my distress is not a punishment but a trial, give me patience to endure it without bitterness. Either way, Lord, keep my heart tender toward Thee.

When I feel surrounded, when “the floods compassed me about,” be Thou my refuge. Quiet the accusations of the enemy that tell me I am finished. Silence the lies that say I am forsaken. Remind me that Thy compassions fail not, and that Thou art able to bring me out of the deep with a deliverance that glorifies Thy Name. Teach me to pray when I cannot see, to worship when I cannot feel, and to trust when I cannot trace.

Lord, I surrender my need to control outcomes. I lay down my panic, my striving, and my secret despair. If “thy billows” must pass over me for a season, then keep me from drowning in unbelief. Hold my mind steady when the waters rise. Guard my heart from hardened resignation. Preserve within me a living hope, that I may yet testify that Thou art faithful.

Give me spiritual sight to recognize that Thou dost work in the deep places—forming character, purifying motives, uprooting pride, and drawing me into deeper dependence upon Thee. Let the sea become a place where I learn prayer anew, where I learn obedience anew, where I learn that Thy will is good and perfect even when it feels severe. Teach me to wait for Thee, to listen, and to obey promptly when Thou dost speak.

And when Thou dost bring me out—when the waters recede and the storm gives way—make me quick to give thanks and slow to forget. Put a testimony in my mouth that honors Thee, that comforts others who are “in the midst of the seas,” and that declares that the Lord reigneth even over the deep. Use my life to point others to Thy mercy, so that those who feel compassed about may learn to call upon Thee.

I pray all these things with reverence and submission, trusting Thy wisdom, clinging to Thy mercy, and resting in Thy power. In the deep and in the deliverance, in the waves and in the calm, Thou alone art God.

Amen.
