A Prayer for Protecting Innocence and Seeking Divine Justice
“Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.” — Judges 19:24
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with hearts heavy and burdened by the injustices that seem to permeate our world, much like the troubling narrative found in Judges 19:24, where desperation and moral decay lead to the sacrifice of the innocent. We are reminded of the gravity of our choices and the preciousness of human life in Your divine sight. Lord, we thank You for this vivid depiction of the desperate circumstances faced by those in ancient times, and we humbly seek Your guidance as we navigate our own lives, communities, and the broader world.
In this scripture, we witness the tragic reality of a father forced to make a horrific decision to protect a stranger, even at the expense of his own daughter and the concubine. “Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.” Father, we acknowledge the pain embedded in this verse; it reflects not only the dire circumstances surrounding the characters in this story, but also the societal collapse of values that can occur when we stray from Your commandments. We cry out for mercy and protection for all innocent lives caught in similar turmoil today.
Lord, as we reflect on this troubling passage, we pray for our families and our communities. We ask that You grant wisdom and courage to parents, guardians, and leaders to stand firm in their commitment to protect the vulnerable and the innocent. May we never find ourselves in situations that force us to weigh lives against one another, but rather may we be empowered by Your Holy Spirit to advocate for justice, righteousness, and protection for all.
We are reminded of the importance of every life, Lord. No one should ever be a bargaining chip, no one should ever have to suffer in silence. Instill in us a desire to uplift those around us, especially women and children who are often the most vulnerable in strife-filled situations. Give us eyes that see their pain, hearts that empathize with their suffering, and hands that are ready to provide aid and comfort. As we navigate through our lives, make us instruments of Your peace and justice.
Father God, we also acknowledge our own shortcomings and failures to speak out against evil. We lament times when we have turned a blind eye to injustice or remained silent in the face of wrongdoing. Forgive us for our complacency, for our unwillingness to confront the vile acts that plague our society. May we be emboldened to stand against wickedness and advocate for those who cannot defend themselves. Help us to be the voice of reason and morality in a world that often chooses convenience over conscientiousness.
We ask for Your divine intervention to rise against the forces that seek to demean and devalue human life. Lord, awaken a sense of responsibility in our hearts. Help us to recognize that every person reflects Your image, and thus deserves dignity and respect. May our actions reflect a commitment to love one another as You have commanded.
Finally, Lord, as we consider the story of Judges 19 in its entirity, we plead for Your protection over the innocent everywhere. Shield them from harm, and bring those who do evil to justice. May Your light shine in our darkened world, guiding us back to righteousness, allowing compassion and love to prevail over fear and hatred.
We trust in Your promise that justice will ultimately prevail, and we place our faith in You, knowing You hear our prayers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
