A Prayer for Wisdom and Leadership in Turbulent Times
"And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out." - Judges 9:29

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today, deeply humbled by Your greatness and awed by Your wisdom. As we reflect on the words spoken in Judges 9:29—"And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out"—we are reminded of the leadership and authority that comes from You alone.
Lord, just as Jotham expressed his longing for a people united under righteous leadership, we beseech You to help us recognize the importance of godly governance in our communities and countries. We ask that You raise up leaders whose hearts are aligned with your will, leaders with the courage to stand against tyranny and injustice, and those who are committed to serving the people, not ruling over them.
In this world filled with division and strife, we pray that our leaders might exhibit humility, empathy, and integrity. Help them to seek Your guidance in every decision they make, that they may reflect Your love and righteousness in their rule. May they possess the wisdom to discern right from wrong and the courage to remove any threats to peace, as Jotham desired to remove Abimelech, who sought power through manipulation and deceit.
Father, we recognize the dangers of pride and ambition in leadership. Just as Abimelech sought to increase his army, may we be cautious of leaders who aspire to elevate themselves at the expense of others. We pray for discernment to identify those who genuinely care for the common good versus those who are driven by self-interest and power. Help us, Lord, to support and elect leaders who seek to build us up rather than tear us down.
Equip us as Your followers to be diligent in our prayers for our leaders and our nations. We remember that powerless we may feel at times, but prayer is our most potent tool. Stir within us a spirit of intercession—may we rise up to pray for those in positions of authority to lead with justice, compassion, and a heart after You. May our voices be raised not in anger or bitterness, but in love and truth, as we seek to reflect Your glory on this earth.
In addition, as we look to our own roles within our communities, we recognize that leadership begins with each of us. Please guide us and empower us to be faithful stewards in the small areas of authority we may possess. Help us lead by example, to influence others positively, and to create ripples of goodness in our homes, workplaces, and beyond.
Lord, we know that an army can be increased, and strength can be amassed, but if it is not founded in righteousness, it is built on a shaky foundation. May we, too, build our lives and influence upon a solid rock—Your Word, and our faith in You. May we support one another in our endeavors, emboldening our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to stand firmly on the principles of Your Kingdom.
As we navigate the challenges before us, we ask for Your protection over the vulnerable, the oppressed, and those who stand against tyranny. We pray for a revival of hearts in our nations, turning toward You and recognizing Your sovereignty over all. May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
In closing, Lord, we declare our trust in You as our ultimate leader, our guide, and our hope. Help us to remember that all authority belongs to You, and our ultimate allegiance must be to You alone. What we cry out for, O God, is peace, justice, and righteousness—accomplished, we pray, for Your glory and the good of Your people.
In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray,
Amen.
