The Prayer of Confession and Release
"And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:" - Leviticus 16:21

O Lord, God of mercy and grace, we come before You today with hearts humbled and contrite by the weight of our sin. We are reminded of the sacred act prescribed in Leviticus 16:21, where Aaron laid his hands upon the head of the live goat, confessing over him all the iniquities, transgressions, and sins of Your people. In this powerful imagery, we see the profound truth of how our transgressions can be placed upon another, symbolizing the hope of atonement and the possibility of redemption.
Heavenly Father, as I take a moment to reflect on this act of confession, I come before You, recognizing my own iniquities and those of my family, my community, and our world. Just as Aaron did, I lay my hands, metaphorically, upon the head of a scapegoat, acknowledging the gravity of our wrongdoings and the separation they create between us and You.
Lord, I confess the sin of pride that has blocked my ability to see others as I should. I ask for forgiveness for my selfish ambitions that have led to a disregard for the needs of my brothers and sisters. Release me, Lord, from the chains of arrogance and replace them with a spirit of humility, that I may live in accordance with Your will and reflect the love of Christ to everyone I encounter.
I confess the sin of anger that often erupts within me, leading to bitterness and resentment. I ask for Your healing touch to cleanse my heart from these wrongful emotions. Help me to put away wrath and anger, embracing the fruits of the Spirit instead. Teach me to respond to others with kindness and grace, motivated by love rather than hurt.
Father, as Aaron confessed all the iniquities of the children of Israel, I pause to recognize the deep-seated generational sins that may linger in my lineage. Unforgiveness, hatred, and divisions that have perpetuated over the years remind me of just how much we need Your intervention. Help me to break the cycle, to be a bearer of reconciliation in my family, and to be a peacemaker in my community.
In this moment, I turn to the burdens of society that weigh heavily on my heart. I lift up the suffering of those who are oppressed and marginalized, confessing the indifference that allows injustice to thrive. May Your Spirit incite a burning desire within me to advocate for the voiceless and to offer compassion to the needy around me.
As the scapegoat was sent into the wilderness, I entrust to You each of these confessions. I ask that You carry them away, where they may trouble me no more. Help me to believe in the power of true forgiveness and to walk in the freedom that comes from being washed clean by the blood of Jesus Christ. Let the weight of my sins be lifted, Lord.
God of the wilderness, in sending away the scapegoat, may I also experience a fresh release. Allow my spirit to breathe anew, unencumbered by guilt or shame. Teach me to embrace the new life You offer, grounded in Your love, mercy, and grace. Fill me with the strength to face the wilderness ahead, with confidence that I am not alone, but rather guided by Your presence.
Lord, I thank You for the rich history we find within scripture and for the lessons it teaches us about responsibility, redemption, and the beauty of atonement. With a grateful heart, I commit to living in a way that honors Your grace, sharing with others the story of transformation that You weave through our lives.
In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I pray. Amen.
