The Good Samaritan's Heart: A Prayer of Compassion and Healing
"And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him." - Luke 10:34

Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, we come before You today to seek Your guidance and strength as we endeavor to embody the spirit of compassion exemplified by the Good Samaritan, as recorded in Luke 10:34: "And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him."
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the lessons You impart through Your holy Word. In a world often marred by indifference, we ask that You instill in us a heart that is sensitive to the wounds of those around us. Just as the Good Samaritan did not pass by on the other side, give us the courage to approach those in need, those who are suffering and are in dire circumstances.
Lord, help us to see beyond our own struggles and to recognize the struggles of others. Inspire us to be vessels of Your love, ready to bind up the wounds of the broken-hearted, the weak, and the weary. Let compassion flow from our hearts like the oil and wine that the Samaritan poured into the wounds of the afflicted man. Bring healing not only to physical bodies but also to emotional and spiritual wounds.
We pray that when we encounter those who have been hurt by life’s circumstances—whether through illness, loneliness, grief, or despair—You will help us to respond with the love and tenderness that You so graciously bestow on us. May our hands be Your hands, healing the sick and comforting the sorrowful. May our words be Your words, speaking hope into the lives of the hopeless.
Gracious Father, teach us to be sensitive to the needs of others. Open our eyes to see the hidden wounds that people carry every day. It is so easy to overlook the pain of others as we immerse ourselves in our own busyness, but remind us, Lord, that we are called to love our neighbor as ourselves. May we remember the times when we were in need and someone reached out to us with kindness.
As we pour out ourselves in service to others, may we also remember to pour in the healing oil of encouragement and the wine of joy that revives the spirit. Help us to share our resources, our time, and our talents, just as the Good Samaritan took of his own to care for another. Grant us a generous spirit, that we might not turn away from the burdens of our fellow men and women, but carry them alongside in unity and love.
Lord, we ask for strength in the face of fatigue and discouragement. Sometimes the task of caring for others can leave us feeling drained and overwhelmed. Yet, remind us, Oh Lord, that the work we do in Your name never goes unnoticed. You promised that whatever we do for the least of these, we do it unto You.
We thank You for the inn, that safe place where the Samaritan took the wounded man. Inspire communities to be places of refuge and healing, where care and kindness are extended freely. May our hearts and our churches reflect the love of God in action. Let us be beacons of hope for all who wander by the roadside, regardless of their status or circumstance.
As we close this prayer, Lord, we commit ourselves to act with compassion, to seek and serve, and to carry forth the legacy of the Good Samaritan in our daily lives. Help us to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this world. In the mighty and precious name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray, Amen.
