A Prayer for Hospitality and Service in the Spirit of Martha
"¶ Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house." - Luke 10:38

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You in this moment of prayer, I humbly reflect on the profound truth found within the words of Luke 10:38, where it is written, "Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house." Lord, I thank You for the riches of Your Word, for every verse is a testament to Your love and interaction with humanity.
In this passage, we witness the warm hospitality of Martha as she opened her home to Jesus, the Son of God. I pray, dear Lord, that You would instill in me the spirit of hospitality that Martha displayed. Grant me the grace to receive others with love and a willing heart, just as she received You into her abode. May my home be a place where guests feel welcomed and cherished, much like the love and kindness that Martha extended to Jesus.
Lord, let the act of welcoming others be more than just a physical invitation into my home; let it be a reflection of the openness of my heart. Teach me to see others through Your eyes, recognizing their worth and the divine spark within them. Help me to make my dwelling a sanctuary where Your presence can dwell, a place of prayer, joy, and laughter. May I, too, be known as someone who joyfully opens my doors to friends, family, and strangers alike in the spirit of Christlike love.
As I think of Martha, I also reflect on the balance she sought between service and discipleship. It is evident that Martha was a diligent worker, striving to serve not only her guests but also You, Lord. I recognize that in my service, there is a temptation to become weary or distracted by the tasks at hand. Lord, I ask that You remind me to find my rest and focus in You amidst the busy hours of my day. Help me to prioritize time spent with You in prayer and reflection, as much as I prioritize serving those around me.
Jesus, in this passage, You teach us the importance of being present. When You arrived at Martha's home, You brought with You the words of eternal life — the very essence of our existence. I pray that in my daily life, I may also be present for others, showing them the same attention and love You have shown me. Help me to listen attentively, love unconditionally, and serve wholeheartedly without forgetting the vital importance of connection and relationship.
Father, let me be mindful that my good doings should spring from a heart that seeks to glorify You. Encourage me to serve without the burden of obligation, but rather with joy and gladness, reflecting the love Christ has for His body, the Church. Help me to see the face of Jesus in every person I meet, that in serving them, I am serving You, as Your Word assures us.
Lastly, Lord, I pray for those who may feel like they are in the shadow of service, who often toil in the background and go unnoticed. I lift up women and men like Martha who may feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities. Remind them gently of their intrinsic value in Your kingdom, that their efforts, no matter how small, are of great significance. Assure them that their labor is not in vain, and that their love and diligence bless others far beyond their understanding.
In this prayer, I echo the sentiments of my heart, asking for a transformation in both my spirit and my actions. Let the spirit of Martha dwell in me, combining a heart for service with the knowledge that sitting at Your feet is where true peace and fulfillment lie. As I grow in hospitality and active service, may I ever be reminded of Your words, comforting me to know that my role is part of a greater divine purpose.
In Jesus’ holy name, I pray,
Amen.
