A Prayer for Balance in Service and Stillness
"Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." - Luke 10:38-42

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You in prayer, my heart is heavy with the burdens of the day. I am reminded of the story You shared through the actions of Martha and Mary, as recorded in Luke 10:38-42. I reflect on how Martha welcomed You into her home with eagerness, wanting to provide a service that she believed would honor You. Yet, she found herself consumed with the demands of serving, her heart distracted by tasks and responsibilities, while her sister Mary sat at Your feet, absorbing the wisdom of Your words, basking in Your presence.
Lord, I praise You for this beautiful narrative. It highlights the tension we often feel between the urgency of our daily tasks and the quiet call to simply be with You. I find myself identifiably in both of these women, striving to fulfill the roles and responsibilities laid before me while simultaneously yearning for a deeper connection with You. Help me, O Lord, to balance my service and my stillness.
Martha, dear Martha, she was 'cumbered about much serving,' and in her busyness, she lost sight of the divine moment that was unfolding in her home. I pray for forgiveness and understanding as I too sometimes become overwhelmed by my commitments, the endless to-do lists, the expectations of those around me. In my desire to serve, may I never neglect to nurture my spirit and attend to Your presence. Teach me, God, that while serving others is important, it should not come at the cost of communion with You.
Jesus, Your gentle reminder to Martha, 'Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful,' resonates in my spirit. I ask for the grace to discern what is truly necessary in my life. Help me to differentiate between the urgent and the important; between the noise that demands my attention and the still, small voice that speaks Your truth. Let me not become so absorbed in activities that I miss the miracles happening within and around me.
In my moments of chaos and distraction, draw my heart back to that 'one thing' that is most needful—sitting at Your feet and hearing Your words. Let it be my greatest joy to cultivate intimacy with You. May I find strength in those quiet moments of prayer and meditation on Your Word, allowing it to replenish and fortify my weary spirit. Help me to remember that the blessings You impart cannot be earned through effort but are freely given in love.
Lord, I lift up to You all those who feel like Martha, running tirelessly in the pursuit of approval and significance. Comfort them with Your truth and lead them towards rest in You. Grant us the discernment to recognize when to serve and when to pause—to listen, to reflect, to be rejuvenated in Your presence. Help us to create sacred spaces in our busy lives, where we can encounter You and be transformed by Your love and wisdom.
May the path of Mary inspire us to prioritize our relationship with You over the pressures of the world. Teach us to choose the 'good part' each day, knowing that it is that intimate fellowship with You that cannot be taken away from us.
In closing, I pray that all my actions reflect a heart that has first been filled with Your presence. Let my service be an outpouring of the love and peace I receive from You. Help me find joy in both the work of my hands and the stillness of my heart.
In the precious name of Jesus, I pray,
Amen.
