A Prayer for Humility and Generosity
"¶ Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee." - Luke 14:12

Heavenly Father,
As I gather in the quietness of this moment, I am drawn with reverence towards Your Word and the profound truths contained within it. I reflect on the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, especially the words recorded in Luke 14:12, where He instructs us not to limit our generosity to those who might repay us in kind. Your wisdom transcends our understanding, and I humbly approach Your throne of grace, seeking to embody the spirit of this teaching in my life.
Lord, I acknowledge how easy it is to fall into the patterns of this world—inviting only those who will reciprocate our kindness or elevate our status. This instinctive desire for validation and social standing often clouds my judgment and makes me forget the true essence of generosity which flows from an unselfish heart. You, O God, are the ultimate example of selfless love.
I thank You, Father, that You have shown me through Your Son that true hospitality and compassion extend beyond the comfortable circles of familiarity. Jesus invites us to embrace the marginalized, the lonely, and the rejected. Help me to heed His words, to understand the need for radical hospitality that seeks to reflect Your grace. May I learn to open my home and my heart to the less fortunate, the strangers, and those who cannot repay me.
Lord God, I pray for a heart that mirrors Your love. Let me not be motivated by the anticipation of reward or recognition but by the calling to serve others in humility. Forgive me when I have prioritized my own comfort or reputation over the intrinsic value of generosity. Help me to build relationships not on what I can gain but on the pure joy of giving, free from expectations.
Fill me with compassion for those in need. Open my eyes to opportunities for service that I may have overlooked. Teach me to discern the cries of those who lack, whether it be through physical meals, emotional support, or spiritual nourishment. May I respond with willingness and courage, even when it stretches me beyond my comfort zone.
Father, I also lift up the individuals who might cross my path. Whether they are the homeless, the broken-hearted, or those whom society chooses to overlook, lead me to them, and give me the resources and the heart to help them. As Jesus instructed, may I extend invitations to the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind, knowing that in doing so, I am not seeking a reward from them but laying up treasures in heaven.
I recognize, O Lord, that sometimes this calling may lead me into uncomfortable places. I may be met with resistance or misunderstanding. Strengthen my spirit during these times, reminding me that service done in Your name is never in vain, and that I am participating in Your divine plan. Teach me patience and perseverance, and keep my heart attuned to Your voice, guiding me through the complexities of human needs and relationships.
May my actions consistently point back to You, revealing the greatness of Your mercy and love. Let my life be a testament to the transformative power of genuine, selfless friendship with You at the center. I ask for the grace to act as Your hands and feet in this world, touching lives and somehow reflecting the sacredness of Your love.
Finally, I pray that in cultivating a spirit of generosity, I may also experience the profound joy that comes from serving—you have promised that those who give with pure hearts will be blessed. Let my heart be filled with laughter and gladness, knowing I am fulfilling Your command to love freely and without condition.
In the name of Jesus, the embodiment of love and generosity, I pray. Amen.
