A Prayer for Generosity and Compassion towards the Needy
"Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just." - Luke 14:12-14

Heavenly Father,
We come before You with hearts full of gratitude and a deep sense of purpose, reflecting on the teachings of Your Son, Jesus Christ. In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 14, verses 12 to 14, we hear His profound words: "Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just."
Lord, these words challenge us to look beyond the confines of our comfort zones, our immediate circles of friends and family. They urge us to extend our table to those who are often overlooked and forgotten. We acknowledge that it is easy to invite those who can repay our kindness with their company, gifts, or favors. Yet, You call us to a higher standard of generosity that aligns with Your heart.
Father, I pray for a spirit of true hospitality, one that seeks to embrace the marginalized and uphold the dignity of those in need. Let us learn to see these individuals not as burdens or inconveniences, but as precious souls who are deserving of love and care. Help us to cultivate a heart that beats in rhythm with Your compassion, that we may embrace the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind, just as Jesus demonstrated through His life.
Guide us, O Lord, to open our eyes to those around us who are suffering. May we never turn a blind eye or a deaf ear to the cries of the needy. Encourage us to act not from obligation but from genuine love. Instill in us the understanding that when we serve others, we serve You, for You said, "As ye have done it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40).
Lord, we beseech You to change our hearts from self-centeredness to selflessness. Help us to recognize the abundance of blessings we have received from You, and may that abundance overflow into acts of kindness towards others. May we experience the joy that comes from giving without seeking anything in return, as exemplified by You, our ultimate giver.
Teach us to plan our gatherings, our feasts, and our dinners with intentionality and purpose. Let us envision seating at our table those who might never have a chance to dine with us otherwise. Fill our homes with a spirit of welcome, where all feel loved, cherished, and included, regardless of their social status or physical abilities.
As we extend our hands to help those who can't repay us, remind us, dear Lord, of the promise You have made: that we will be blessed, and that our acts of kindness echo into eternity at the resurrection of the just. May that prospect embolden us to act without fear or hesitation, knowing that we are storing up treasures in heaven.
Heavenly Father, may our lives reflect the love and grace that You have so wonderfully poured into us. May our actions mirror the heart of Christ, who dined with sinners and embraced the outcasts. Let us strive to be Your hands and feet in this world, making room at our tables for everyone in need.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Luke 14:12-14 - "Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your wealthy neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
