"Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." - Luke 18:10-14

O Gracious and Everlasting God,

We come before You today with hearts weighed down by the weight of our own humanity, recalling the profound truth of the words spoken by our Lord in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 18, verses 10-14. In this passage, we see two men approach the temple to pray, one with a heart full of pride and self-righteousness, the other bearing a spirit of humility and repentance. Lord, as we reflect on this story, we ask You to pierce the veil of our own pride and help us to understand the essence of true prayer and humility.

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that like the Pharisee, we often approach You with a false sense of righteousness. In our hearts, we sometimes reflect the judgmental spirit of the Pharisee, declaring, "God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are..." Forgive us, Lord, for the moments we allow ourselves to feel superior or to look down upon others for their sins. We recognize that we are all sinners saved by Your grace, and there is none who is righteous apart from You.

Teach us, Lord, to see ourselves as we are—flawed and imperfect beings in dire need of Your mercy. Help us to come before You not with a boastful heart but with an open spirit, just as the publican did, who "would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner." May we learn from this humble tax collector who dared not to lift his eyes to You but instead sought Your mercy with a contrite heart.

Father, we humbly recognize that we often stand afar off, consumed by our shame and guilt. Yet, You beckon us to draw near to You, to approach Your throne with confidence, knowing that Your mercy and grace abound. Lord, in those moments of despair when our hearts condemn us, remind us of Your great love and forgiveness. May we echo the words of the publican, seeking Your mercy with all sincerity, for we know that it is not our deeds that justify us but Your grace alone.

As we pray today, Lord, we also seek wisdom to discern our motivations. Help us to serve You not from a place of obligation or to showcase our own righteousness but out of love and reverence for who You are. Keep us from the shadows of hypocrisy and self-importance, allowing us instead to serve in humility, realizing that pride comes before the fall.

We are thankful, Father, for the revelation that "he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." Help us to embrace this wisdom, to seek not our own glory but the glory that comes from You. We desire to be vessels of your peace and grace, reflecting Your love to a world so in need. May our lives be a testament to Your goodness as we walk humbly before You and others.

In the quiet moments of our prayers, may we find the courage to confess our sins and shortcomings without shame, knowing that You receive the broken-hearted and the contrite in spirit. Give us a heart for others, a desire to pray not only for ourselves but also for those who have strayed, those who feel lost, just like the publican.

Lord, we thank You for the promise that comes from humility and repentance. As we go forth from this place, remind us to carry with us the lessons learned from these two men’s prayers; may we strive to be like the publican—ever reliant on Your mercy, ever grateful for Your grace. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, who humbled Himself for our sake.

Amen.

Luke 18:10-14 - "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
