“Glory to God in the Highest”: A Prayer for Heaven’s Praise, Earth’s Peace, and God’s Good Will
“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” — Luke 2:13-14
Most High God, Father of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, we come before Thee with reverence and wonder, our hearts stilled by the holy scene recorded in Thy Word. We lift our eyes by faith toward that night when heaven drew near to earth, and we remember what is written: “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Lord, let the power of this proclamation reshape our thoughts, our worship, and our daily walk.
O God, we adore Thee for the glory that is Thine alone. We confess that our lives have often been filled with hurried speech, scattered attention, and the seeking of our own name. Forgive us for the ways we have robbed Thee of honour—by pride, by complaint, by unbelief, by prayerlessness, and by cold devotion. Teach us to join the “multitude of the heavenly host” in pure praise, not merely with words, but with hearts that tremble at Thy holiness and minds renewed by Thy truth. Make our worship deeper than a moment and stronger than a mood. Let the cry of heaven become the posture of our souls: “Glory to God in the highest.”
Lord, we ask that Thou wouldst set our affection on things above. When the world presses in with noise and anxiety, remind us that heaven is not silent. There is a host that praises Thee, a worship that does not grow weary, a joy that does not depend upon earthly ease. Grant us a faith that can look beyond what is seen and trust what is promised. May our homes, our churches, and our secret places of prayer become small reflections of that holy chorus—places where Thy name is honoured, Thy Word is treasured, and Thy presence is welcomed.
We also bring before Thee the longing spoken in Thy Word: “and on earth peace.” God of peace, we confess that we have not always walked in peace. We have carried bitterness. We have entertained suspicion. We have spoken too quickly and listened too little. We have tried to control what we ought to surrender. Cleanse us, Lord. Give us the peace that comes not from circumstances, but from reconciliation with Thee. Where our consciences accuse us, let us run to Thy mercy. Where our hearts are troubled, teach us to cast our care upon Thee. Where relationships are strained, grant us humility to confess, courage to forgive, and wisdom to seek restoration.
We pray for peace in our families—between husband and wife, between parents and children, between siblings, and among all who dwell under the same roof. Let Thy peace govern our words at the table, our decisions in difficulty, our tone in correction, and our patience in trial. We pray for peace in our communities, for those crushed beneath violence, poverty, fear, and division. Restrain evil, strengthen those who do justice, comfort the grieving, protect the vulnerable, and guide leaders to act with integrity. Yet, Lord, we acknowledge that the peace proclaimed from heaven begins with hearts surrendered to Thee; therefore, draw many to Thy salvation, that true peace may spread as the gospel is believed and lived.
And Father, we cling to the final phrase of the heavenly announcement: “good will toward men.” Thank Thee for Thy kindness, Thy compassion, and Thy gracious purpose. We are not worthy of Thy favour, yet Thou hast shown mercy. Let the knowledge of Thy good will melt our fear and break our hard-heartedness. Teach us to receive Thy grace with gratitude, and to extend that grace to others. Make us generous instead of grasping, gentle instead of harsh, ready to bless instead of eager to be blessed. Where there is prejudice in us, remove it; where there is selfishness, uproot it; where there is despair, replace it with hope.
Lord, let the glory spoken by angels be seen in the way we live. May our work be done as unto Thee. May our speech be seasoned with grace. May our choices reflect holiness. Help us to be peacemakers, not peace-breakers; servants, not masters; faithful witnesses, not silent disciples. Keep us watchful, prayerful, and thankful. And when we are tempted to believe that darkness has the final word, bring us back again to the light of Thy proclamation: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
We offer Thee this prayer with humble confidence, trusting Thy character and Thy promises, and desiring above all that Thy name be exalted. To Thee be glory, both now and for ever. Amen.
