A Prayer for Guidance and Righteousness

"Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?" - Luke 3:12

"Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?" - Luke 3:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

As I come before You today, I am reminded of the words we find in Luke 3:12, where the publicans sought Your guidance through Your Son, Jesus: "Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?" O Lord, these words resonate deeply within my soul, for they are filled with a profound sense of yearning for direction, purpose, and transformation. Just as the publicans, who occupied a place of moral ambiguity and societal scorn, approached Jesus with humble hearts, I too seek Your wisdom and understanding in this complex life we lead.

Lord God, I acknowledge my imperfections, my sins, and the ways I have strayed from Your path. Like the publicans, I am keenly aware of my need for Your grace and mercy. I recognize the urgency of my situation and the importance of seeking Your counsel in all matters. I come before You with a contrite heart, longing for baptism not just of water, but of the Spirit—an immersion in Your holiness that cleanses me from my transgressions and allows me to bear fruit worthy of repentance.

O Master, I stand before You today on behalf of all who feel lost and marginalized, those whom society may scorn or dismiss. I pray for those who feel they have no one to look to for guidance, just as the publicans approached knowing they needed instruction. Lord, help us to recognize the need for accountability and spiritual mentorship in our lives. Just as they did, may we cry out to You in sincere prayer, asking, "What shall we do?"

In seeking Your divine wisdom, Lord, I beseech You to show me the steps I must take daily. Help me to understand that transformation begins within, that true repentance requires a radical shift in behavior and attitude. Teach me, Father, to be honest about my weaknesses and to bring them before You. For it is in my vulnerability that Your strength can manifest excellently.

Guide me, O Lord, as I navigate through the complexities of life. Enlighten my mind with Your truth that I may discern between right and wrong. In a world that often confuses morality, help me to be steadfast in my adherence to Your Word. May the Holy Spirit illuminate my heart to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You, as You have commanded in Micah 6:8.

As I ponder the response of Jesus to the publicans, I pray that You would reveal to me the specific ways I can act justly and show compassion to those around me. Let my hands be instruments of Your peace and charity. Strengthen me to serve my community, uplift the downcast, and be a voice for the voiceless. Show me how I might use my gifts and resources to extend Your love to those in need, just as John the Baptist instructed the publicans to be honest in their dealings, live righteously, and support their neighbors.

Lord, I also pray for the courage to face my own shortcomings and the strength to renounce any selfishness or greed that may dwell within me. Clear my heart of those things that separate me from You and from my neighbors. Help me to embrace humility as I allow Your will to reign in my life and recognize that true greatness comes from serving others in Your name.

May we, like the publicans, come to You with sincerity, eager to listen, eager to act. As we ask, "What shall we do?" may we receive Your answers with faithfulness and may they transform us into the people You have called us to be. We place our trust in You, O Master, as we seek to live lives that glorify You and further Your kingdom.

In Jesus' blessed name, I pray,

Amen.
