The Solemn Acknowledgment of God’s Goodness

“And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.” — Mark 10:18

Heavenly Father,

As I come before You in prayer today, I acknowledge the profound truth that resonates within the words spoken by Jesus, as recorded in Mark 10:18, where He queried, "Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God." In this simple yet mighty statement, Jesus humbles Himself and directs our attention back to You, the ultimate source of goodness. I pause in reverence, recognizing that all goodness, purity, and righteous intentions stem from Your divine nature.

Lord, I thank You for sending Your Son, who, though fully divine, chose to embody humility and perfect love during His time on earth. Through His life, He demonstrated what it means to live in accordance with Your will. His words remind me that any acknowledgment of goodness must point towards You.

Father, I confess that too often I seek validation in the goodness of my own actions or in the achievements of those around me. I get caught up in the pursuit of worldly measures of success and validation, losing sight of the fact that all that is of true value is birthed from You. Forgive me, O Lord, for the times I have placed my hopes and happiness in transient things, rather than finding comfort and assurance in Your unchanging goodness.

As I reflect on this scripture, help me to grasp the depth of its meaning. When Jesus posed the question, He was inviting the rich young ruler—and by extension, us—to examine our hearts and recognize the true nature of goodness. You, O God, are the only one who is intrinsically good. All goodness that resides within me is a mere reflection of Your greatness. Inspire me to share this understanding with those around me, guiding them back to You as the fountain of all mercy and grace. Let me be a light that points to Your goodness, illuminating the hearts of those who may see only darkness.

Lord, I pray for clarity in my own understanding. May I never again be tempted to idealize men or women, attributing goodness to them in a way that excludes You from the center of our lives. Let me remember that even the best of us are flawed, yet Your goodness remains unwavering. Help me to foster a heart that earnestly seeks after You and Your righteousness.

In this world where we often conflate goodness with our human efforts, I desire a spirit that pursues a more profound relationship with You—the only true and good God. Teach me to show grace towards others, as Your goodness has been shown to me. Just as Jesus challenged the rich young ruler, help me to examine my own heart, identifying any misconceptions that I may hold, and leading me towards repentance.

Heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom to know that true goodness is not always recognized in the world's eyes. Often, it resides in acts of service, humility, and the love we extend to others, mirroring the love You have shown us. May I strive to reflect Your goodness in all circumstances.

I also pray for those around me. Help them to realize, just as I seek to understand, that goodness does not arise from their struggles or pursuits, but from a relationship with You. Shine Your light upon my friends, family, and community, drawing them closer to the truth of who You are—the embodiment of goodness itself.

Thank you, God, for Your infinite greatness and for the loving kindness that leads us to repentance. I rejoice in knowing that as I acknowledge Your sovereignty, I can rest assured in Your promises. May I always remember that none is good but You alone.
