A Prayer for Rest and Reflection on the Preparation Day
"¶ And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath," - Mark 15:42

O Sovereign Lord, we come before You in awe and reverence, bowing our hearts and minds as the evening draws near. We reflect on the sacred rhythms of time that You have established, particularly the preparation day before the Sabbath, as noted in the Gospel of Mark 15:42: "And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath."
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of rest and the sacredness of the Sabbath. We recognize that in the very fabric of creation, You ordained a time to cease from labor to draw closer to You. As the sun sets and we find ourselves in the preparatory evening, we seek to align our hearts with Your divine purpose. Help us to see this moment as an opportunity, not just to prepare for a day of rest, but to prepare our hearts to encounter Your presence in a deeper way.
Lord, we understand that preparation goes beyond tangible arrangements. It is about positioning ourselves spiritually and emotionally for communion with You. As we cleanse our homes and set aside our work, may we also cleanse our hearts of any burdens, distractions, or anxieties that may hinder our relationship with You. Teach us to cast our cares upon You, for You are attentive to our needs and graciously receive our petitions.
Jesus, our Savior, You exemplified the ultimate act of preparation, willingly laying down Your life for our sins. As the evening of Your sacrificial death approached, You faced betrayal and abandonment, yet You remained steadfast in Your mission to bring salvation. Help us to reflect on the weight of Your sacrifice, knowing the significance of preparation in laying the groundwork for our salvation. May we always remember and honor the price You paid so that we could have a renewed relationship with You.
In this preparatory evening, I ask for forgiveness for the times I have allowed the busyness of life to overshadow the importance of resting in Your presence. Stir within us a hunger and thirst for righteousness. Disrupt our complacency and lead us to a place where we actively seek Your face, where communication with You becomes our first priority rather than our last resort.
Holy Spirit, guide us in our preparations for this Sabbath. Help us to set aside worldly concerns and distractions, allowing us to focus solely on worshiping You. Remind us to reconnect with Scripture, and to immerse ourselves in prayer and meditation, not just on the Sabbath, but each day of our lives. May our time spent in worship be a beautiful offering that brings joy to Your heart.
As we prepare our minds and spirits for rest, teach us to embrace the stillness. Let us find solace and peace in the quiet hours of the Sabbath, where we reflect on Your goodness and mercy. Instill in us the value of solitude and silence, where we can listen for Your voice, where we can be reassured of Your love, and where we can find strength for the journey ahead.
Lord, strengthen our resolve to keep the Sabbath holy, a time to commemorate not just a day of rest but a day of remembrance of who You are and what You have done. As we remember the resurrection, we also anticipate Your return, drawing us closer as we await that day.
In closing, Father, fill our hearts with the peace that surpasses all understanding as we prepare for the sacredness of the Sabbath. May we honor it as a day devoted to worship, reflection, and family, united in spirit and purpose. Let the evening serve as a beautiful transition from the busyness of our week to the tranquil embrace of Your loving presence.
We ask all this in the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
