A Prayer of Reflection on Justice and Mercy
"Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them. But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them. And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, Crucify him. Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him. And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified." - Mark 15:6-15

Heavenly Father,
As I come before you today, my heart is heavy with the weight of the events that unfolded on that fateful day, when a choice was made that would alter the course of humanity. I turn to the words of Mark 15:6-15, and I ponder the multitude assembled before Pilate, voices raised in fervent demand, crying for Barabbas: "Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas..."
Lord, I am reminded of the power of public opinion and the collective will of the people, which can sway even those in authority. This scene depicts the struggle between righteousness and the desires of the crowd. I pray for wisdom and discernment in my own life, that I may never be swayed by the loud voices of the world but remain true to Your teachings and the truth of Your Word.
As I reflect on Barabbas, a man bound by his own sins, I recognize the contrast between him and Jesus, who was innocent of wrongdoing. Barabbas, a criminal, a murderer, was chosen over the King of Kings. "But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?" Here lies the heart of the matter, Lord—You offered the people the most valuable gift of all, and yet they chose the lesser.
Father, forgive us for the times we, too, choose the fleeting gratifications of this world over the eternal joy found in You. Help me to be a voice for the voiceless, to stand up for Your truth, to crave Your righteousness instead of the fleeting delights that lead to death. May I always remember that the easier path is not always the right one.
When Pilate stood perplexed, asking, "What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?" I am struck by His willingness to question the mob. Lord, grant me the courage to question my own motives, the decisions I make, and the desires of my heart. May I never cast judgment without understanding the full picture, just as the crowds failed to see the implications of their cries for crucifixion.
You created us to be reflections of Your mercy and love! Yet, just as the chief priests incited the people, so too can we be easily turned against one another when envy and jealousy take root in our hearts. I pray for a heart free from envy—a heart that rejoices in the successes of others, loves deeply, and offers grace without condition.
As the crowd shouted, "Crucify him!" I realize that these cries echo through time, a reminder of the struggles within my own soul. I ask for your guidance as I confront my sin, that I may choose to crucify my old self—my selfish desires, my pride, my anger—daily upon the cross and live in the newness of Your grace. I must remember, Lord, it was my sin that led You to that cruel cross.
Help me to understand fully what it means that You were delivered to be crucified for the sake of the redemption of humanity. "And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified." May I never take lightly the weight of this moment, the moment when justice appeared to fail, yet grace triumphed over sin.
In moments of doubt and darkness, remind me, dear Father, that You are the God who delivers justice and mercy in perfect harmony. Teach me to extend that very mercy to others, as You have so graciously extended it to me. May I become a beacon of Your love in a world so desperate for truth.
As I pray today, I surrender my fears, my worries, and my judgments to You. Strengthen me, guide me, and help me to choose the way of Jesus, the way of love, even in a world that sometimes seems to stand against it. Thank you for the gift of Your Son, who was willing to bear my sin and shame, so that I might live in freedom.
In the precious name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Mark 15:6-15 - "Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified."
