A Prayer for Wisdom and Discernment
"Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying," - Matthew 15:1

Heavenly Father,
As I approach Your throne of grace today, I come with a heart that seeks understanding and wisdom, guided by the words found in the scripture of Matthew 15:1, which states, "Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying." Lord, I ponder on this moment where the learned of the law approached Your Son, and I ask for clarity and insight into the lessons embedded in such encounters.
Father, You are the omnipotent and omniscient God, the Creator of all that is seen and unseen, the One who knows the innermost thoughts of our hearts. As the scribes and Pharisees came forth from Jerusalem, they came not out of desire for truth, but rather to challenge the authority of Christ. How often do we, too, find ourselves coming before You with preconceived notions or intentions that are not aligned with Your will? I pray that You help me recognize the moments when I approach You with my own agenda, rather than earnestly seeking to understand Your divine plan.
Lord, let me not be a scribe or a Pharisee, caught up in the rituals and traditions of religion that I miss the heart of the matter. I reflect on the conversations Jesus had with these leaders, and I ask that You grant me discernment to recognize when I, too, may be clinging to traditions that hold no true substance or purpose in my walk with You. Shine a light on the habits and practices in my life that may serve as stumbling blocks to the authentic relationship You desire with me.
Heavenly Father, I seek wisdom in my interactions with others. Help me to engage with those around me in a spirit of love and humility. Just as the Pharisees challenged Jesus with their questions, allow me the grace to ask questions that cultivate deeper understanding rather than provoke division. When faced with debates or challenges of my faith, remind me to respond with the love that You exemplified in Your ministry. Help me to discern the hearts of those who seek to challenge the truth, and guide me to respond with gentleness and respect, not in arrogance or pride.
Jesus, You spoke truth in love, and I yearn to emulate that in my actions and words. Let my heart be filled with compassion for those who find themselves lost, or those who, like the Pharisees, think they know Your ways but miss the essence of the gospel. Father, grant me the vision to see beyond the surface and to understand the struggles and burdens that others carry.
As I meditate on this verse, I am reminded that my faith is not the product of human understanding but rather a grace-filled relationship between me and You. I pray for humility to recognize that my understanding of Your ways is limited and that I must continually seek Your counsel and wisdom. Let me not be swayed by the opinions of the world but firmly grounded in Your Word, seeking to know You more deeply each day.
Lord, help me to lead by example, to embody Your teachings in my daily life. Give me the strength and fortitude to stand firm in my beliefs while extending grace and mercy to those still on their journey toward You. Let my life be a testimony of Your love and abilities, attracting others to the saving grace found only in You.
As I conclude this prayer, I ask for a heart that remains sensitive to Your guidance, always ready to learn and grow in faith. Help me, Lord, to be a seeker of truth and a bearer of Your love. May every interaction I have reflect the light of Christ, bringing glory to Your name. Thank You for Your mercy and for the opportunity to come before You in prayer.
In Jesus’ holy name, I pray, Amen.
