A Prayer of Faith: Seeking Mercy and Healing
"Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly." Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. He replied, "It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs." "Yes it is, Lord," she said. "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table." Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed at that moment." - Matthew 15:21-28

O Lord, most gracious God, we come before You today in humble reverence, reflecting upon the powerful encounter between Jesus and the Canaanite woman, as recorded in Matthew 15:21-28. In that moment, amidst a backdrop of cultural barriers and deep-seated prejudices, a mother's love and desperation pierced through, seeking mercy and healing for her beloved daughter, who was tormented by evil.
Lord, as we gather here, we recognize that You are the embodiment of mercy. Just as this woman cried out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! For my daughter is demon-possessed, and she suffers terribly," we too bring forth our personal struggles and challenges before You. We are aware of the strongholds and darkness that may afflict our loved ones and our communities. We beseech You, O Lord, to look upon us and listen to our cries, for we need Your divine intervention and healing touch.
You are no stranger to our suffering, O God. You know the burdens we carry, both seen and unseen. This woman, in her desperation, came to You knowing that You possessed the power to heal. Yet, she was met with silence. Lord, we sometimes feel that our prayers fall on deaf ears. I ask that You instill in our hearts the strength to persevere in faith, just as the Canaanite woman did, despite the lack of immediate response. Help us to understand that silence does not equate to indifference; rather, it may be a test of our faith and resilience.
We marvel at this woman’s tenacity, as Your disciples urged You to send her away because she was persistent. Even in the face of rejection, she knelt before You and uttered the simple yet profound plea, "Lord, help me!" O Lord, we also kneel before You today, recognizing our inadequacies and shortcomings. Help us to always approach You with that same humility and honesty. Let those words be the echo of our hearts, as we seek You in all circumstances—"Lord, help me!"
When confronted with the notion that it was not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs, this woman displayed immense faith and understanding of Your goodness. She replied, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” What wisdom! What faith! O God, teach us to be bold in our faith, to recognize that even the smallest morsels of Your grace are more than enough to heal and restore.
May we learn to approach You with confidence, believing that nothing is too difficult for You. Let us remember that Your grace is boundless and that the table is open to all who seek it. In our own challenging moments, remind us to hold on to hope and to be persistent in our petitions, knowing that You delight in granting mercy.
In that powerful moment, You acknowledged her faith, saying, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” How we long to hear those words in our lives! May our faith grow and flourish, bringing us to a place where we can boldly declare our trust in You.
As we conclude this prayer, we ask that You impart healing upon all those who are suffering. Whether it be from physical ailments, emotional turmoil, or spiritual oppression, we believe that in You, Lord, we find hope and healing. May Your will be done in our lives and in the lives of those we love. Thank You, Lord, for your unending compassion. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
