A Prayer for Vision and Purpose on the Journey to Jerusalem

"And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples," - Matthew 21:1

"And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples," - Matthew 21:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father, we come before You today, in reverence and awe, as we reflect on Your Word contained in the Scriptures, particularly in Matthew 21:1, which states, "And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples." Lord, this verse illuminates the journey undertaken by Jesus and His disciples, and we are reminded of the importance of our own journeys in life.

As we approach You in prayer, we acknowledge that like the disciples, we are often being sent on missions, tasked with roles that may seem daunting or unclear. We ask for clarity and purpose as we journey through our lives. Just as Jesus prepared His disciples for their part in the unfolding story of salvation, we seek Your guidance in understanding our divine assignments. Help us, O Lord, to recognize the paths You set before us and to embrace them with faith, knowing that You are with us.

We find in this passage a sense of urgency and importance, as Jesus drew near to Jerusalem with the knowledge of what awaited Him. Father, we ask that You instill in us a sense of urgency for the work of Your kingdom. Let us not become complacent or distracted by the distractions of this world. Instead, help us to keep our eyes firmly fixed on the mission You have placed in front of us. May we approach our own "Jerusalem" with a courage that reflects Your love.

Lord, as the disciples were sent to retrieve a donkey for Jesus, remind us that sometimes, our missions require us to step into places where we may feel unqualified or uncertain. Oftentimes, we may resist such tasks because we feel inadequate or ill-prepared. Yet, we know that You qualify those whom You call. We pray for the faith to take those first steps, even when we cannot see the entire path ahead of us. Fill our hearts with trust in Your providence, that even the smallest acts of obedience can lead to something magnificent in Your eyes.

Moreover, we come before You with humility, asking for the spirit of servanthood as demonstrated by the disciples. They showed willingness and readiness to obey Jesus without hesitation. Teach us to serve others with the same dedication, recognizing that our service is unto You. May our lives be characterized by a readiness to act upon Your call – whether that is to lend a helping hand, offer a word of encouragement, or stand up for justice in a world filled with injustice.

As we meditate on the significance of the Mount of Olives, a place of prayer and submission, help us to have our own mountains of prayer where we can retreat from the noise of life. Show us that it's in these moments of solitude and communion with You that we gain strength for the journey ahead. May we find solace on our own mountains of olives, pouring out our hearts to You in prayer.

Finally, as we ponder the way Jesus entered Jerusalem, we remember that this was a journey toward His ultimate sacrifice – an act of unfathomable love and redemption. Lord, let us never lose sight of Your boundless grace and mercy that covers us. Help us to carry the message of the Gospel as we journey through our days, sharing the hope and love of Christ with all we encounter. May our lives reflect the light of Christ, drawing others to the beauty of redemption.

In closing, we lift our voices in praise and thankfulness, trusting You as we walk this journey of faith. Let us remember that our steps are ordered by You and that every destination along the way is part of Your perfect plan. We pray this in the name of Jesus, our Savior and Guide. Amen.

"As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”" - Matthew 21:1-11
