A Prayer of Humble Submission
“And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.” — Matthew 21:7
Gracious and Eternal Father,
As I come before You today, I am filled with gratitude for the open door to approach Your heavenly throne. I reflect on the profound act depicted in Matthew 21:7, where the humble donkey and colt served a divine purpose, carrying our Lord Jesus into Jerusalem. What a remarkable testament to Your love and wisdom, O God! In this moment, I pause to contemplate the significance behind this humble entry, and to offer a prayer infused with my trust and faith in Your plan for my life.
Almighty God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, You have chosen to make Yourself accessible to us through the gentle nature of a donkey and the simplicity of a colt. Teach me to embrace simplicity and humility in my life as I witness the beauty of Your purpose being fulfilled in the unlikeliest of vessels. Help me to remember that the tools You use for Your Kingdom’s work may not always be grand or glorious, yet they are essential to accomplish Your divine will.
Lord, as the disciples took off their clothes to place them on the donkey and colt, I pray that in my life, I too may strip away anything that hinders my relationship with You—be it pride, materialism, or distractions. You desire that I lay down my burdens, my struggles, and my ambitions, much like those garments, to honor Your presence and will. May I willingly offer my life—a living sacrifice, accepting Your truth and aligning my heart with Your purpose.
Help me, O Lord, to yield to Your commands. Just as the disciples obeyed the direction You gave them, I seek the same courage and willingness to act upon the guidance of Your Holy Spirit. Teach me to be attentive to Your voice, to recognize when You call me to fulfill a task for the greater good, even if it seems insignificant. I long to be like those who gathered, witnessing the triumphant entry of Christ. May I actively participate in the work of advancing Your Kingdom while also celebrating the joy of Your coming.
Holy Spirit, empower me to share the message of salvation that came so humbly into this world. Let me find ways to reflect Christ through the actions of my daily life. Allow Your fruits to shine in my character, that others may recognize Your light within me just as those crowding the streets of Jerusalem laid down their palm branches in reverence. I am reminded that while the King was riding a humble beast, it was a message of peace, not of military might or worldly success. Teach me, Lord, how to walk in peace, and to carry this message of reconciliation into my relationships as well as my service to others.
May I, too, herald the coming of the King in every space You place me, with joy and excitement. Let my heart be filled with anticipation as I await and reflect on Your glory—both that which is to come and that which is present within me.
Heavenly Father, help me to attach my ambitions to Your desires for me, remembering the example set by Your Son. Don’t allow me to seek grandeur, power, or popularity but help me instead to walk in humility, trusting that Your ways are higher than my own. Teach me to rejoice in the simple things and the quiet moments, knowing that they are pivotal in the tapestry of my life.
Finally, Lord, as we honor Your path into Jerusalem, let my heart continually cry out, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" May Your joy overflow in my life, leading me to worship and serve with an unwavering spirit of gratitude.
In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.
