A Prayer of Reflection on the Burial of Christ

"Matthew 27:57-66: 57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: 58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. 62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. 64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch." - Matthew 27:57-66

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we come before You today, our hearts are heavy with the weight of the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. It is in moments of deep reflection, like these, that we recall the events surrounding His death and burial as recorded in the holy scriptures, particularly in the book of Matthew, chapter 27, verses 57 through 66. We come to You not just with words, but with our entire beings, yearning to grasp the depth of trust, love, and significance embedded in each verse.

O Lord, we beseech You to open our hearts and minds as we meditate on Joseph of Arimathaea, a rich man who, despite his social standing, stepped forth in boldness to intercede for Jesus. His act of courage in going to Pilate to beg for the body of Christ speaks volumes to us. Help us, Father, to embody the same courage in our lives. May we dare to stand for truth and justice, even when it feels uncomfortable or when we fear rejection. Let us not be swayed by the opinions of the world around us, but rather be driven by our faith and our love for You.

In verse 58, we read how Pilate commanded the body of Christ to be delivered. We pray, Lord, that we may also receive what is entrusted to us with reverence and respect. When Joseph took the body of Jesus, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, signifying care and honor. Father, in our own lives, we often handle situations and relationships carelessly. Teach us, we pray, to treat those entrusted to us with the utmost love and kindness, recognizing the value and dignity embedded in every life. May our actions reflect the clean linen that Joseph used, a reminder of purity and honor.

Lord, we also see in this passage the profound sorrow of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, who sat facing the sepulchre, grappling with their grief and loss. In our times of sorrow, help us to remember that You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). We ask for Your comfort to envelop us when we face our own tombs of despair. May we find strength from Mary’s example, teaching us to remain in Your presence, even when hope seems lost. Grant us faith to believe that even in the darkest hours, You are working behind the scenes toward a glorious resurrection.

As the chief priests and Pharisees conspired to secure the tomb, fearing that Jesus would rise again as He foretold, we recognize how often we, too, can live with doubt and disbelief, imprisoning ourselves in the circumstances before us. In our moments of uncertainty, remind us that You have already conquered death! How often do we allow fear to seal our own sepulchres, preventing us from experiencing the fullness of life Christ intended for us? Lord, forgive us for the times we have doubted Your power and Your promises. Help us to trust unwaveringly in Your Word, for in You, Father, we find our hope.

Ultimately, we find solace in knowing that even as they set a watch at the tomb, our God is greater still! Jesus, who was buried, did not remain in the grave. Three days later, You rose in victory! Help us to live in the light of that resurrection, embracing the eternal life You offer. May we, too, roll away the stones of fear and doubt that may try to confine us, standing bold and unashamed, ready to proclaim Your goodness.

Thank You, Lord, for the sacrifice of Your Son and the hope that His resurrection brings to our lives. May we carry this hope into our world, truly embodying the light of Christ in our actions, words, and deeds. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
