A Prayer for Strength and Forgiveness in the Face of Adversity
"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." - Matthew 5:39

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the profound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, as recorded in Matthew 5:39, which state, "But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." Oh, how challenging these words can be to our human nature! We live in a world that often promotes a spirit of retaliation, a culture that encourages us to stand firm against those who wrong us, to seek revenge and to engage in conflict. Yet, You, in Your infinite wisdom and divine love, call us to a higher standard, a standard of grace that seems so contrary to our instincts.
Lord, I ask for Your help in understanding the depth of this teaching. Help me to embrace it with my whole heart, for I am weak and prone to anger when faced with injustice. I find it difficult to turn the other cheek, to respond with love instead of bitterness. Each day brings its challenges, and temptation lurks around every corner—temptation to strike back with words and actions that do not reflect Your nature. Teach me, O Lord, to resist those urges and to instead embody the grace You have shown me, even when faced with hostility.
Help me to remember, Father, that turning the other cheek is not a sign of weakness, but a demonstration of strength and faith in You. It is a commitment to love despite the pain, and a conscious decision to place my trust in Your divine justice. Remind me that every act of kindness, every moment of forgiveness, carries with it the power to break the cycle of anger and hatred that permeates our world. Let my response be one that shines Your light into the darkness, drawing others to You through my actions.
I pray for those who have caused me pain—those who have smitten my cheek, those who have spoken ill of me or treated me unjustly. Lord, even as I struggle, I ask that You bless them and soften their hearts. Help me to see them through Your eyes, to understand their own struggles and pain, and to approach them with compassion rather than disdain. Give me the strength to pray for them, not just in a perfunctory manner but with genuine love and concern for their souls. Teach me to forgive them as You have forgiven me in my own failings. Let my heart be free from the shackles of resentment and bitterness, for they only serve to imprison my spirit.
As I seek to adopt this radical approach to kindness and love, grant me peace in knowing that I do not fight my battles alone. You are my defender, my refuge, the God who sees and hears all injustices. You promised us, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord" (Romans 12:19). So I relinquish my right to retaliate, trusting that You will make all things right according to Your will and timing.
May Your Holy Spirit empower me each day to walk in the light of this difficult commandment. May my life be a testament to the transformative power of love, a love that refuses to be conquered by evil. Teach me to respond to hostility with kindness, to anger with grace, and to hatred with love. Let my actions speak louder than words, giving glory to You in all circumstances.
In the name of Christ, who taught us to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us, I pray. Amen.
