A Prayer of Generosity and Compassion
"Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away." - Matthew 5:42

Dear Heavenly Father,
As I come before You in humility and awe, I am reminded of the teachings of Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, where He said in Matthew 5:42, "Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away." Lord, this simple yet profound directive catches my heart and challenges my spirit. Today, I want to come before You, not only in prayer but with the desire to cultivate a heart that mirrors this command.
Father, I recognize that the world often pushes us towards self-preservation and self-interest. In a society that prioritizes accumulating wealth and protecting our own comforts, it is easy to become blind to the needs of others surrounding us. But Lord, Your calls us to a higher standard—a calling to open our hearts and our hands in support of those who are in need. Help me to see those who are in a place of need, whether it be physical, emotional, spiritual, or financial.
As I reflect on this verse, I ask for You to give me a spirit of generosity. Let my heart be moved by compassion rather than indifference. When someone comes to me with a request, be it a plea for help or a simple desire to lend a ear, grant me the wisdom to respond as You would have me to. In all things, allow me to walk in love, ready to give and ready to serve.
Lord, help me to remember that every gift—every bit of support I offer—is not mine to keep but rather something I have received from You. Open my eyes to understand that resources are temporary, but the impact of kindness can echo through eternity. May I use what You have given me not just for my comfort, but to uplift and bless others around me. There are so many who are struggling, who feel alone, or who are estranged from Your light. Help me to be a beacon of hope in their lives that reflects Your love.
I pray that I do not hesitate when someone comes to borrow from my abundance, whether it's my time, my talents, or my material possessions. Help me to be open-hearted and willing, for I know that in giving freely, I am participating in Your divine economy—where what I give in love becomes seeds sown into the hearts of those around me.
Father, I ask for forgiveness for the times I have turned away from those who sought help. Forgive me for my reluctance, my judgments, and for holding back resources you have so freely given to me. Heal my heart where it has been hardened or calloused by the world’s ways. Let me not be driven by fear or lack but by faith and confidence in Your provision for both myself and for others.
As I step into my daily interactions, remind me that everyone I encounter is an opportunity for me to embody love and generosity. Let my life reflect the teachings of Jesus, who exemplified perfect love while on Earth. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide my every response—to give with joy, to lend willingly, and to support selflessly.
Lord, let me be an instrument of Your peace in a world that desperately needs it. When I give, may it serve as a reminder of Your infinite love and grace that You have shown me. May they sense Your presence through my actions, and may it draw them closer to You.
Thank you, Lord, for the calling to be generous and kind. May I carry this verse in my heart daily and live out its meaning, honoring You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
