A Humble Heart of Fasting
"¶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward." - Matthew 6:16

Heavenly Father, Creator of the heavens and the earth, I come before You today with a heart full of gratitude and reverence. I thank You for the gift of Your Word, which serves as a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105). Today, I reflect on the profound wisdom found in Matthew 6:16, where You admonish us regarding the essence of fasting: "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward."
Lord, I seek to understand the essence of this message and to internalize its truth within my soul. I recognize that fasting is not merely a ritual or an outward display of piety, but rather a deep and intimate act of worship that demands sincerity and humility. I confess that too often I may have approached fasting as an obligation or a method to gain recognition among men rather than as an expression of my dependence on You and a yearning for Your presence.
As I reflect on the phrase "of a sad countenance," I pray for a transformation in my attitude as I seek You in fasting. Help me to cast away any desire to appear solemn or downtrodden, as though my sacrifice should please others. Instead, let my fasting be an act of joy and a willing sacrifice, primarily directed toward growing closer to You. May my countenance reflect the joy of Your spirit, bubbling forth from an overflowing heart of gratitude for all that You have done in my life.
Help me, Lord, to remember that fasting is not about the accolades or approval of others. When I choose to abstain from food or other distractions, may it be a time dedicated to prayer and meditation on Your Word. I pray that my heart would be united with Yours during these moments of fasting—that I would long for You more than bread (Psalm 63:1), and find my satisfaction in Your presence rather than in the things of this world.
Forgive me for the times I've let the eyes of men dictate my motivations. I acknowledge the sin of hypocrisy, for desiring to appear righteous while neglecting the true motives of my heart. Help me to genuinely seek Your favor above all else, knowing that Your approval is the only reward that truly matters. Teach me that when I fast, my focus should not be on how I appear to others, but rather how I can draw nearer to You. In my fasting, let there be no trace of pride or self-righteousness but an earnest desire for communion with You.
Father, as I embark on this journey of fasting, grant me strength and discernment. Help me to choose wisely what I fast from and when I engage in this powerful practice. Let my heart be aligned with Your purposes, seeking not just deliverance from my struggles but a deeper understanding of Your will for my life.
May my times of fasting be coupled with prayer, reflection, and worship—transforming them into significant moments of encounter with You. As I lean into You, fill me with Your peace that surpasses all understanding and Your joy that is my strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Let my fasting bear fruit in my spirit, revealing the areas that need Your divine touch and transforming me into a vessel of Your love and grace.
Thank You, Lord, for the privilege to fast and draw close to You. May each moment be a reminder of my reliance on You, and may I emerge from this time renewed, refreshed, and focused exclusively on glorifying You in all aspects of my life. I ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, my Savior. Amen.
