A Prayer for Discernment Against Deceit
"There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor." - Nahum 1:11

Heavenly Father,
As we gather in Your holy presence, we humbly come before you with hearts laden with both reverence and concern. We reflect on the powerful words of Nahum 1:11 from the King James Version, which tells us, "There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor." O Lord, we recognize that in every age and in every realm, there arise individuals and influences that seek to devise plans contrary to Your divine will.
First, we thank You for Your Word which warns us of the dangers lurking within and outside the community of faith. This verse alerts us to the reality that the enemy often operates through wicked counsel, inciting thoughts and actions that are opposed to Your righteousness. We ask that You grant us the wisdom to discern these influences in our lives. May we be swift to identify any counsel that seeks to draw our hearts away from You, and may we possess the courage to reject ideas and schemes that are veiled in darkness.
O Lord, grant us spiritual insight, akin to the discernment expressed in James 1:5, where You encourage us to ask for wisdom, and it shall be given to us. We seek that wisdom now, especially in contexts where we may be tempted to listen to the voice of deceit—whether through friends, leaders, or even our own inner thoughts that may lead us astray.
We pray for the Church, Your beloved body, that we may be vigilant against any wicked counsel that arises from within our midst. In a world filled with misinformation and manipulation, help us ground ourselves firmly in Your truth, as articulated through Scripture. Let the Holy Spirit guide and guard us, steering our hearts and minds toward the counsel that reflects Your character—pure, lovely, and of good report (Philippians 4:8).
Lord, we remember that even the greatest leaders and influencers can be misled or might unintentionally align themselves with corrupt motives. We pray for our spiritual leaders—pastors, teachers, and elders—that they may be steadfast in Your truth. Encourage them, fortify them against temptations to compromise or counsel in ways that don't reflect Your heart. Surround them with a community of support that speaks life and truth into their decisions, keeping wicked counsel at bay.
As we navigate our day-to-day lives, help us to be discerning in how we engage with others. Let us not only guard our hearts from wicked counsel but also be sources of encouragement and truth for those around us. Equip us to speak words that lift others toward Your purposes and empower them to seek You wholeheartedly. Remind us daily that we are called to be salt and light in a corrupt world, shining forth Your love and wisdom in our interactions.
Loving Father, we also take a moment to intercede for those who may be deceived or misled by wicked counselors. We ask that Your Spirit would intervene in their lives, shedding light on the truth and drawing them towards Your arms of grace. May they see the futility of rebellion and sin against You, and in humility return to the path of righteousness.
In all things, let Your will be done. We trust that You are sovereign and that no wicked counsel can ultimately prevail against Your purpose. We surrender our hearts, minds, and all decisions to You. Lead us, guide us, and keep us in Your perfect peace. We seek Your glory above all.
In the precious name of Jesus, we pray,
Amen.
