A Prayer for Wholesomeness in Words
"A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit." - Proverbs 15:4

Heavenly Father,
We come before You with grateful hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance in every word we speak, in every interaction we have, and in every thought we allow to dwell within our minds. Your Word reminds us in Proverbs 15:4, 'A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.' Lord, we recognize the profound truth encapsulated in this scripture, and we humbly ask for Your divine help as we strive to live out this truth in our daily lives.
Father, we know that the power of life and death is in our words. We acknowledge that our speech can either uplift and encourage or tear down and destroy. Help us to cultivate a wholesome tongue, one that brings forth the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, and kindness. May our words be like that tree of life, bearing good fruit that nourishes not just ourselves but also those around us. Teach us to speak words that heal rather than hurt, words that build up rather than break down, and words that foster understanding rather than division.
Lord, we ask for the strength to abstain from the temptations of speaking negatively or maliciously. Forgive us for the times we’ve allowed our tongues to deliver comments that are cutting, sarcastic, or harmful. Purify our hearts so that our speech may reflect the goodness and purity that resides in us through Your Holy Spirit.
Help us to remember that before we speak, we should pause and reflect: Are our words wholesome? Do they bring life to a situation? Are they kind and thoughtful? Let us be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger (James 1:19). In doing so, we can avoid the snares of perverseness that can lead to a breach in our spirit and the spirits of those we interact with.
Transform our mindset, Lord, so that we might view our conversations as opportunities to share Your love and grace. Instill in us a sense of responsibility in our dialogue, knowing that the tongue can either affirm the beauty of Your creation or mar it with trials and troubles. Let our words bear witness to Your goodness, reflecting Christ in us, the hope of glory.
We pray for those around us, too, that they too may experience the power of a wholesome tongue. May we be instruments of peace, reaching out with words of encouragement and support to those who are weary. Let our conversations spark joy, lift spirits, and ignite hope in the hearts of others. Help us to be generous with our praise and mindful of the power our words have in the lives of those we love and encounter.
In our families, let our words be seasoned with grace. May we strive to communicate lovingly, appreciating one another with kindness and respect. In our workplaces, may our conversations echo with respect and positivity, creating an atmosphere that fosters collaboration and productivity. In our communities, let us be seen as voices of hope, always ready to speak life into challenging situations, never contributing to the culture of despair and division.
Lord, as we reflect on this verse, guide us toward deeper inner transformation, for it is from the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. Fill our hearts with Your love, joy, and peace, so that what overflows into our speech reflects Your character and not the chaotic noise of the world around us.
May we consistently seek the wisdom found in Your Word as we strive for wholesomeness in our dialogues. Empower us to be ambassadors of Your truth, love, and grace, bringing life-giving words not only to ourselves but also to those we touch on this journey. Protect our hearts and tongues from the sins that seek to disrupt our lives and the lives of others.
Thank You, Lord, for the grace that is always available to us, enabling us to grow in our speech and our relationships with one another. We ask all of this in the precious name of Jesus.
Amen.
