A Prayer for Contentment and Wisdom
"The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:" - Proverbs 30:15

Heavenly Father,
We come before You, humbly seeking Your wisdom and guidance, grateful for the gift of Your word which enlightens our minds and deeply nourishes our souls. As we reflect on the wisdom found in Proverbs 30:15, where it is stated, "The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough," we are reminded of the insatiable desires that can plague our hearts and minds.
Lord, we acknowledge that the world around us is full of temptations and desires that often lead us astray from Your purpose for our lives. Just as the horseleach— that leech which cries out for more, and is never content—we too can find ourselves in a cycle of wanting more, needing more to feel fulfilled. We understand the dangers of unchecked desires and the emptiness that can ensue when we chase after things that ultimately lead us away from You.
Father, we ask for Your mercy and wisdom to cultivate contentment within our hearts. Help us to see the beauty in what we have and to be grateful for Your blessings each day. May we not be driven by the endless cry of 'give, give,' but rather filled with appreciation for Your provision in our lives. Teach us to find joy in simplicity, in the little things that often go unnoticed, and in the rich blessing of relationships with family, friends, and community.
We pray for understanding that there are indeed things that crave our attention and our desires but do not satisfy. Allow us to recognize the three things that are never satisfied: the grave, the barren womb, and the earth that is not filled with water. These powerful metaphors remind us of the deeper voids that exist within us, voids that only You can fill. God, help us to redirect our thirst towards You, the Living Water, that we may never thirst again. May we grow in our relationship with You, seeking to know You more, and understanding that true fulfillment comes from being in communion with You, through prayer, worship, and a study of Your word.
As we face the allure of material possessions and worldly success, remind us of the fourth thing that says, "It is enough"—the fire, which represents passion and zeal that can consume us. Help us to keep our passions aligned with Your will, burning brightly with purpose without consuming the balance that You have laid out for our lives. Guide us, O Lord, in managing our desires that they may align with Your plans, and help us to be wise stewards of what You have entrusted to us.
May we learn that in giving, we receive much more than what we seek. Help us to remember the teachings of Christ who calls us to serve, to love, and to share our abundance with others. May our spirits truly understand that generosity—whether of our time, love, or resources—creates a wealth that is beyond measure in Your kingdom.
As we navigate this life, thank You for the reminders of Your scripture. Instill in us a profound understanding of contentment. Let us not be driven by greed or endless desires but be satisfied in You alone. Allow our hearts to rest peacefully in Your grace. We lift this prayer in the name of Jesus, who is more than enough, trusting fully in Your everlasting provision and love.
Amen.
