“Mercy in the Heavens, Faithfulness unto the Clouds” — A Prayer from Psalm 36:5 (KJV)

O LORD, our God, we come before thee with humble hearts and reverent minds, desiring to worship thee as thou hast revealed thyself in thy holy Word. We lift our eyes above the troubles of this present world and we fix our gaze upon thy greatness. We cling to the testimony of Scripture, and we confess with wonder and gratitude the truth of Psalm 36:5: “Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.”

Father, we praise thee for thy mercy. We acknowledge that thy mercy is not small, not scarce, not uncertain, and not limited by our weakness. Thy mercy is “in the heavens,” higher than our thoughts, greater than our understanding, purer than any goodness we could ever claim for ourselves. When we feel overwhelmed by our failures, when our consciences remind us of sins we cannot undo, when shame would silence our prayers and fear would make us hide from thy presence, remind us that thy mercy is above us and over us—steady, holy, and sure. Let this heavenly mercy draw us to repentance, not to despair. Teach us to hate sin without doubting thy compassion, to confess honestly without making excuses, and to seek thy face without presumption.

O LORD, we praise thee also for thy faithfulness. Thy Word declares that “thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.” Thou art faithful when we are inconsistent. Thou art faithful when our strength is small. Thou art faithful through changing seasons, through unexpected sorrow, through waiting that tests our patience, and through joys that tempt us to forget thee. In times when our prayers seem unanswered and our hopes feel delayed, anchor our souls in this truth: thy faithfulness reaches higher than the storms we see and farther than the horizons we can measure. Thou art not a man, that thou shouldest lie; thou dost not promise and then forget. Thou dost not begin a good work and then abandon it. Strengthen our trust in thee so that our faith may not rest on feelings, but on thy unchanging character.

Lord, let the reality of thy mercy and faithfulness reshape our daily lives. When we wake, may we remember that thy mercy has already gone before us into the day. When we labor, may we depend upon thy faithfulness to provide wisdom, endurance, and integrity. When we speak, may our words be seasoned with mercy, reflecting what we ourselves have received. When we are tempted to be harsh, impatient, or unforgiving, remind us that we have been upheld by a mercy “in the heavens.” When we are tempted to worry and to carry tomorrow’s burdens today, remind us that thy faithfulness “reacheth unto the clouds,” and therefore reaches to every detail of our lives.

We pray for those who feel crushed beneath guilt and regret. Let them see that thy mercy is higher than their past and greater than their fear. We pray for those walking through grief, sickness, anxiety, loneliness, and disappointment. Let thy faithfulness be to them like shelter under a steadfast sky. We pray for families under strain, for marriages that need healing, for parents seeking wisdom, for children needing protection, for friendships that have been wounded. Pour out thy mercy, and prove thy faithfulness again and again.

Make us, O LORD, a people who worship thee not only with our lips, but with our lives. Let gratitude rise in us like a steady offering. Teach us to remember what thou hast done, to testify of thy help, and to wait with hope when we cannot yet see the outcome. Keep us from pride in seasons of blessing and from bitterness in seasons of lack. Let Psalm 36:5 remain near to our hearts, so that we may live with holy confidence: “Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.”

We ask these things with reverence and faith, trusting not in ourselves, but in thee, whose mercy is high and whose faithfulness is sure. Amen.
