A Prayer for Righteousness and Discernment
"He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil." - Psalms 36:4

Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with humble hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance. As we meditate on the words of Psalm 36:4, which solemnly reminds us that "He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil," we are confronted with the reality of our innermost thoughts and intentions. Lord, we recognize that our hearts are prone to wander, to create schemes that stray from Your paths of righteousness. Indeed, there are times when we have, in our own ways, entertained thoughts that are contrary to Your will and goodness.
Oh Lord, we ask You to cleanse our hearts and minds. Shine Your divine light upon the areas of our lives where we may unknowingly devise mischief or set ourselves in harmful paths. Help us to recognize that every thought that leads away from love, kindness, and goodness is a mischief of the mind, a distraction from Your presence. Forgive us for those moments when we have permitted negativity to creep into our hearts, when we have plotted against our peace, and sought after things that do not honor You.
Father God, we acknowledge that there is so much evil in the world, and yet too often, we find ourselves not abhorred by it as we should be. Teach us how to abhor evil in all its forms! Instill in us a fierce desire to stand against wrongdoing and a compassionate heart that seeks not only to understand but to eradicate the roots of malice in our hearts and in our communities. Stir up a righteous indignation within us that compels us to act and speak in truth instead of malice.
Lord, as we lay down at night, may we not forget to check our hearts' intentions. Let us reflect upon the day’s interactions and thoughts. Did we harbor any ill will? Were we indifferent to wrongdoing? Did we act in ways that glorified You? Help us to set our minds upon what is pure, lovely, and of good report, as we close our eyes. Replace every mischief we have allowed in our hearts or minds with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. May we find solace in Your presence, resting assured that You are our refuge.
Gracious God, we also pray for discernment. In a world so often filled with confusion and darkness, let Your Holy Spirit guide us in truth. May we lay down our fleshly desires and pick up our cross daily, living in a manner that is pleasing to You. When we come across situations that tempt us to devise mischief, remind us that we are called to a higher standard. Help us to walk in integrity, to be a light in the darkness, and to be a reflection of Your character in all we do.
We pray for those around us—friends, family, and even those we may struggle to love. Lord, create in us a heart that advocates for righteousness, that shines Your love and truth. Help us to encourage others to walk away from evil, to turn from paths that do not serve You, and instead, lead them to the everlasting light. May we find ways to confront evil not with malice or revenge, but with compassionate truth that offers hope and redemption.
As we navigate life's challenges, help each of us to remember the great significance of our choices and thoughts. Lord, let our reflections upon Your word serve as reminders of the importance of our intentions. Help us to draw closer to You each day as we strive to embody the virtues You call us to uphold.
In the loving and mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
