A Prayer for Returning to Our First Love
"Revelation 2:1-4: 1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love." - Revelation 2:1-4

O Lord God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, we humbly come before Your throne of grace, drawn by the words of Revelation 2:1-4. We acknowledge that You are the One who holds the seven stars in Your right hand and walkest in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks. You are the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, and we seek Your presence in this moment of prayer.
As we meditate on Your message to the church of Ephesus, we recognize the commendation given to them for their unwavering works, tireless labor, and great patience in Your service. Thank You, Lord, for the faithfulness of those who have gone before us, who have stood firm against the wickedness of the world and upheld the truth against the voices of deceit. We are reminded that they could not bear those things that were evil, and they diligently tested those who claimed to be apostles, revealing the falsehood in their words.
Lord, we pray that we, too, may be strengthened in our conviction, enduring trials with patience and resisting temptations that seek to sway our hearts. May our faith produce works that are pleasing to You, and may we labor steadfastly for Your name's sake, striving not to faint amidst adversity. Help us to be vigilant watchmen in our churches and communities, ever discerning the spirit of truth from the spirit of error.
Yet, Father, we must heed Your warning. You said, "Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love." O, how piercing these words are to our hearts! We confess that in our busyness and dedication to service, we have allowed the flame of our first love for You to flicker and dim. We have become distracted, caught in the cares of our daily lives and the demands of ministry. We, like the church of Ephesus, have prioritized our works over our relationship with You.
Help us, Lord, to rekindle our love for You—our first love. Remind us of the joy we felt when we first accepted You, the awe we had when we realized the depth of Your love for us. Restore within us a passion that surpasses mere activity; let every act of service stem from our deep desire to know You more and to love You wholeheartedly.
We pray for a stirring in our hearts, a longing for intimacy with You that surpasses all else. May our affections not be drawn away by the distractions of this world. Guide us back to the quiet places where we can sit at Your feet and hear Your gentle whispers. Teach us to prioritize our time with You above all duties and responsibilities. For when we are filled with Your love, the outpouring of our works will truly glorify Your name and reflect Your light.
Lord, let this prayer be a catalyst for transformation in our lives and the lives of those around us. Let us not only hear Your words but respond with action, carving out time in our days to seek Your face. May our hearts once again be enflamed with Your love so that we can shine brightly in a world that desperately needs to witness Your goodness through us.
We thank You for Your grace and for calling us back to You. Let us heed Your counsel, repent where necessary, and return to our first love—You, our God, our Savior, our Beloved. In this, we find our true purpose and fulfillment.
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
