Return to Your First Love: A Prayer of Repentance and Restoration

"To the angel of the church in Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast labored, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God." - Revelation 2:1-7

O Lord God Almighty, Holy and Just, we come before You in humbleness and reverence, thanking You for the grace You have bestowed upon us through Your son, Jesus Christ. We acknowledge that You are the One who holds the seven stars in Your right hand and walks amid the golden candlesticks. We recognize Your omniscience and power—none can hide from Your sight. In this moment, we pause to reflect on Your words from Revelation 2:1-7, seeking to understand the depths of their meaning in our lives.

Heavenly Father, as we read Your declaration to the church in Ephesus, we are reminded of their commendable works, labor, and patience. We can see their dedication in standing firm against falsehood, as You have said, "I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience." Lord, we desire the same recognition in our lives. We pray that You grant us the strength to work diligently for Your kingdom and to stand boldly against evil. Help us, Lord, to be like the Ephesians who tried and tested those who claimed to be apostles but were falsehoods in disguise. May we also bear witness to Your truth, knowing that it is our duty to protect the integrity of the faith.

However, Father, just as You pointed to the Ephesians’ shortcomings, we too recognize there are places in our hearts where we have not aligned with Your will. The realization that they had left their first love strikes deep within us. Lord, we confess that there are times when our hearts have wandered from the passionate devotion we once had for You. We’ve allowed the distractions of this world to pull us away from the fervent love that ignited our faith.

O Lord, how we need Your Holy Spirit to awaken in us a fresh zeal and a desire to return to that first love! We ask that You stir our hearts and revive us, so that we may recall the moments when our souls rejoiced in Your presence. May we remember those early days of our passion, when every word from Your Scriptures was precious and every prayer brought us deeper into communion with You.

Help us, Father, to remember, to repent, and to return to our first works, as You have commanded. We yearn for the full restoration of our love for You—restore the joy of our salvation! We desire a fervent heart that delights in seeking Your face and understanding Your ways. Lord, show us the areas in our lives that need to change, the chains that need to be broken, so that we can wholeheartedly walk in Your presence once more.

We understand the warning You gave to the church in Ephesus—that failure to repent could lead to the removal of their candlestick. We realize, even in our human struggles, that there is a cost associated with losing that intimate relationship with You. We commit ourselves to standing vigilant against complacency and spiritual apathy. Help us to cultivate a heart that delights in Your Word, a spirit that longs for genuine fellowship with You, and a body that actively serves in love.

And to those who overcome, You promised the reward of partaking from the tree of life in the paradise of God. We pray, O Lord, that we may grasp this promise with both hands, allowing Your love to lead us through trials and challenges. May we endure with patience, holding fast to our faith, trusting in Your sovereign plan.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we dedicate ourselves to coming back to our first love—may our lives reflect the passion and devotion that You deserve. We pray these things, seeking Your forgiveness and restoration, as we aspire to shine our lights brightly in a world that so desperately needs You.

Amen.

"“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God." - Revelation 2:1-7
