A Prayer of Reflection on Divine Righteousness
"But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)" - Romans 3:5

Heavenly Father,
I come before You today, awash in the profound reality of Your righteousness, a righteous standard that shines brilliantly against the backdrop of our human frailty. As I meditate upon the words found in Romans 3:5, ‘But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man),’ I find myself struck by the paradoxes that surround Your divine nature.
Lord, I acknowledge that we—Your creation—often stumble and fall short of the glory You intended for us. In our unrighteousness, we can too easily embrace a mindset that rationalizes our failings. We may, in our ignorance, think that our sins magnify Your righteousness—ultimately leading us to question the fairness of Your judgment and the justice of Your vengeance.
Father, I seek to understand the depths of this truth. I recognize that my unrighteousness does not commend Your righteousness; rather, it exposes my own woeful need for Your grace. How can I stand in arrogance and presume to hold Your judgment in the balance as if to deem it unjust? I retract any inclination in my heart that dares to paint You as unrighteous. I trust in Your perfect justice and grace, knowing that You are a God who cannot lie, and Your judgments are true and altogether righteous.
Lord, as I reflect on Your righteousness, remind me of the character that You have instilled within me through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. May I strive to capture, not just the essence of Your righteousness, but to emanate it through my words, thoughts, and actions. Help me to be a reflection of Your light in a world shadowed by sin and despair. Let my life be an instrument that inspires others to seek and know the true essence of righteousness found in You alone.
I confess, Lord, that there are times when I struggle with understanding the nature of Your vengeance. When faced with injustice or wrongdoing, I am quick to desire retribution or to question why You allow such things to linger. Teach me, Father, to relinquish my human cravings for vengeance and to instead rest in the assurance of Your sovereignty. Remind me that vengeance belongs to You, as it is written in Romans 12:19, ‘Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.’ Help me to find solace in the fact that You see every wrong and will address it in Your perfect timing and manner.
May my heart be softened to those who impose harm or injustice, that I may extend grace rather than stir the cauldron of bitterness. Allow me to remember that while my heart may be quick to judge, Yours is eternally patient and merciful, willing to forgive even the most rampant of sinners who come to You in repentance.
Lord, I pray for wisdom to comprehend the balance between Your righteousness and Your grace. May I always cherish the liberty we have in Christ, who paid the price for my sin and turned my unrighteousness into a story of redemption. Remind me that it is not I who commends Your righteousness but rather, Your righteousness that is magnified through the blood of the Lamb, who was slain for my transgressions.
In moments of doubt and confusion as I navigate my faith, let me not stray into the abyss of questioning Your character. Instead, may I stand firm in the truth that You are good and Your ways are higher than my ways. Inspire within me an unshakeable confidence in the righteousness that You freely offer, so that I may share it with others.
Thank You, Lord, for Your Word that guides me, for Your Spirit that convicts me, and for Your grace that sustains me. Help me to live each day anchored in the truth of who You are, proclaiming Your righteousness in a world desperately in need of redemption.
In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray,
Amen.
