Leaves That Do Not Fade: Living From the River That Flows From the Sanctuary

“And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” (Ezekiel 47:12, KJV)

Ezekiel’s vision in this chapter is not merely a picture of scenery; it is a portrait of life as God intends it to be—life that flows from His presence. The verse places our attention “by the river,” where growth happens not by human striving but by holy supply. The key detail is the source: “their waters they issued out of the sanctuary.” The river’s origin is not the ingenuity of man or the strength of the trees. It springs from where God dwells, from the place of worship, from the center of His holiness. The promise of lasting fruit and unfading leaves is connected to that one reality: what comes from God sustains what depends on God.

The verse says that on both sides of the river “shall grow all trees for meat.” The image is abundant and inclusive—“all trees,” not a scarce few. The Lord is not describing a narrow trickle of provision but a river with banks lined in generosity. Spiritually, this confronts the fear of insufficiency. Many souls live as though nourishment is limited and growth is fragile. Yet where God’s river runs, there is room for many trees, many lives, many stories of restoration. The Lord’s supply is not reduced by the number who come to drink.

Then comes a striking promise: “whose leaf shall not fade.” Leaves often reveal a tree’s condition. When drought comes, leaves curl and wither first. But here the leaves refuse to fade—not because the seasons never change, but because the water never stops. There are believers who assume spiritual vitality must rise and fall with circumstances, that weariness is inevitable, that joy will fade when pressure persists. Ezekiel’s river speaks another word: when the inner life is continually fed from the sanctuary, there can be a steadiness that outlasts the heat. The external world may be harsh, but the hidden root is drinking from a holy flow.

The verse continues: “neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed.” Fruit is meant to be taken, shared, and enjoyed. Yet this fruit is not depleted. It is as though the giving does not empty the giver, because the source is endlessly replenishing. In the life of faith, we are often called to pour out: encouragement, prayer, service, forgiveness, patience, generosity. Left to ourselves, we run dry. But the promise here is that the person planted by God’s river can keep blessing without becoming barren. The secret is not personal capacity; it is continual connection.

“It shall bring forth new fruit according to his months.” This is not occasional fruit, but rhythmic fruit—freshness that meets time as it unfolds. The phrase “according to his months” suggests appointed seasons of supply. God is not only able to provide; He provides in fitting ways and in fitting times. There is “new fruit,” not merely repeated old results. The Lord is able to renew what has grown stale: renewed obedience, renewed hope, renewed love, renewed purpose. When the soul drinks from the sanctuary, the Lord can make growth timely—fruit that matches the month you are in right now.

Finally, the purpose of this growth is compassionate and practical: “and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” God’s river produces nourishment and healing. Some need “meat”—strength to endure, wisdom to choose rightly, truth that sustains. Others need “medicine”—restoration from wounds, recovery from sin’s damage, comfort after grief, cleansing from bitterness. The Lord does not grow these trees merely for their beauty; He grows them to feed and heal. A life rooted in God’s presence becomes a place where others can find help.

Consider the invitation hidden inside the verse: come nearer to the sanctuary. Not merely to religious activity, but to the God who gives living water. If your leaves feel faded, do not begin with self-accusation; begin with the source. If your fruit seems consumed, do not surrender to despair; return to the river. The waters still “issued out of the sanctuary.” God has not run out of what you need.

Prayer: Lord, plant me by Thy river. Let my life be fed from Thy sanctuary, not from my own strength. Make my leaves unfading by Thy continual supply. Give me new fruit according to the months Thou hast appointed, and use my life so that others may find meat and medicine through what Thou givest. Amen.
