Loosed from Infirmity: A Call to Healing and Wholeness
“And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.” — Luke 13:12
In the hustle and bustle of life, we often find ourselves burdened by our infirmities, weighed down by the struggles and disappointments we’ve encountered along the way. Luke 13:12 presents a powerful moment of revelation and transformation as we witness an encounter between Jesus and a woman afflicted by a significant ailment: "And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity." (KJV)
This verse serves not only as a historical account but also as a profound reminder of Christ’s compassionate nature and His desire to heal. The first striking element in this passage is the act of Jesus seeing her. In a world so full of noise, His gaze pierces through the chaos and recognizes those who are invisible in society—the marginalized, the suffering, the ignored.
This woman had been bent over for eighteen long years, unable to straighten herself. Imagine the pain she endured—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. She symbolizes many of us who carry long-standing burdens, feeling a sense of hopelessness and despair. Perhaps you, too, find yourself feeling bent low under the weight of affliction, be it illness, grief, shame, or any other kind of burden. The powerful truth in this story is that Jesus sees you. He notices your struggles and your heartache.
When Jesus called her to Him, it was not merely an invitation; it was a command that carried transformative power. Coming to Him signifies our willingness to shed our past burdens and step into the light of His love and healing. The act was one of faith, a movement towards the source of liberation. Drawing near can be daunting, especially when we feel unworthy or overwhelmed. Yet, it is in that very moment of approach where we encounter the grace of God. Jesus is not just calling the physically afflicted; He invites all of us who need healing of any kind to come closer.
When He spoke the words, "Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity," He pronounced not only a physical healing but also spiritual and emotional freedom. This declaration is profound, anchoring itself in the power of God’s voice, which commands creation and heals the brokenhearted. The term "loosed" carries the essence of deliverance. It is an unveiling from chains that bind us. In Christ, we are freed from the bondage of sin, doubt, fear, and insecurities.
As we reflect on this passage, we must ask ourselves: What are the infirmities holding us hostage? Perhaps we are chained by our past mistakes, unfulfilled dreams, or fears that hinder us from moving forward. Jesus is inviting us to unravel those chains. He speaks into our lives with authority, freeing us from the grip of those very things that keep us bound. The good news is that His ability to heal goes beyond the physical; it permeates our very souls, offering a holistic wholeness that is only found in Him.
As believers, we are called to recognize the moments in which Jesus sees us in our struggles and to respond to His invitation to come closer. The act of coming to Jesus is an act of faith, and faith is where healing begins. We must bring our infirmities before Him, laying them down in humility, and embracing the freedom He so desires for us. In our surrender, there is a release; in our trust, there is healing.
Let us not forget that our healing is often a journey rather than an instantaneous miracle. The woman’s affliction lasted eighteen years, yet her faith and persistence brought her to the feet of Jesus. Restoration may require time, but it is guaranteed when we place our trust in Him.
As we meditate on this verse, may we hear the words of Jesus echo in our hearts, asserting our freedom. Let us remember that every moment spent in His presence can usher in healing, hope, and renewed strength. May we rise, as this woman did, straightened and restored, to proclaim His goodness and glory, unbound from all that seeks to bring us down.
