A Prayer for Strength Amidst Disputes
"¶ Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen." - Acts 6:9

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You, my heart is heavy with the burdens of conflict and discord that often arise in our lives. I think upon the words of Acts 6:9, where it is written, "Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen." I find in this account a reflection of the struggles that your faithful servants face, battling not only for truth but also against the opposition that so often seeks to silence Your message.
Lord, I recognize in the narrative that there are many voices that emerge in the midst of discussions. Each group mentioned—the Libertines, Cyrenians, Alexandrians, Cilicians, and those from Asia—represents a diversity of backgrounds and beliefs, yet they converged to dispute against Stephen. In this, I see a reality that persists today: the clash of ideologies and the rise of contention. I pray for Your wisdom and insight as I navigate these turbulent waters.
Grant me the discernment to recognize when I am in the midst of disputes, whether within my own heart or in my interactions with others. May I respond with grace, practicing patience and kindness, even when faced with challenges that seek to derail my faith. Help me to remember that each person I encounter, like the disputants in the synagogue, is created in Your image. I long to see them through the lens of Your love and mercy.
Father, Stephen stood before adversaries armed with the truth of the Gospel. In that moment, he exemplified unwavering faith. I ask that You instill within me a spirit of courage and conviction. When faced with challenges to my beliefs, may I respond like Stephen—standing firm on the foundation of Your Word, unwavering in my commitment to share the hope that is found in Christ alone. Fill me with the Holy Spirit, empowering my witness to be as bold and as profound as that of Stephen, whose faith shone in the darkest of moments.
In the face of discord, remind me, Lord, that disputes do not define our worth nor diminish the power of Your love. Help me to be a peacemaker, reflecting the character of Christ in my interactions. You call us to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. Give me the strength to rise above the noise of contention with a heart of compassion and an attitude of humility. Teach me that sometimes silence is a greater testament to Your power than the loudest of arguments.
As I reflect on the various groups that came against Stephen, I also see the diversity of thought present in the world today. I recognize, Father, that pride and zeal can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. Guard my heart against such temptations. Grant me a spirit of humility that always seeks understanding over the desire to be right. Allow me to engage in conversations that lead to reconciliation rather than division.
Lord, I pray for those engaged in disputes within communities—families, workplaces, and societies. May Your peace reign in their hearts. Extend Your comfort to those who feel threatened or marginalized in disputes. Let them witness Your love shining through Your faithful people, and may they find refuge in the shelter of Your presence.
Finally, I ask that You give me the vision to see disputes not merely as challenges to be overcome but as opportunities for growth—in my character, in my faith, and in my relationship with others. Let every disagreement refine me further into the image of Christ.
I thank You for Your unwavering support and for the guidance of Your Word. May I always rely on You in every situation, knowing that with You, I can stand firm against any disputes that come my way.
In Jesus' name, I pray,
Amen.
