When the Whirlwind Comes: A Prayer Before the Brightness of the Lord
"¶ And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire." - Ezekiel 1:4

Holy and Almighty God,
We come before Thee in reverence and holy fear, and we set our minds upon Thy Word. As it is written in Ezekiel 1:4 (KJV): “And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.” Lord, we confess that we often look at the world with distracted eyes, and we fail to behold what Thou art revealing. Teach us to look again—steadfastly, humbly, and with worship—so that when Thy presence draws near, we will not miss the holy signs of Thy glory.
Father, when Thy Word speaks of “a whirlwind,” we acknowledge that Thou art the God who moves with power that cannot be controlled by man. We repent for the times we demanded calm when Thou wast working deliverance, and for the times we questioned Thy goodness when our lives felt shaken. If a whirlwind must come to awaken us, to turn us from idols, to break pride, and to loosen our grip on what cannot save, then give us grace not to resist Thee. Let every storm that touches our lives be made a servant of Thy will, and not a master of our peace.
Lord, Thy Word also says there was “a great cloud.” We confess that clouds can feel like confusion, delay, and hiddenness. Sometimes we do not see the next step, and we fear what we cannot understand. Yet we choose to trust Thee in the cloud. Teach us to believe that even when our sight is limited, Thy throne is not. Help us to walk by faith when answers are not immediate, and to worship Thee when our feelings are uncertain. In the cloud, remind us that Thou art near, that Thou art speaking, and that Thou art guiding.
And, O God, we tremble at the words, “a fire infolding itself.” We acknowledge Thy holiness, Thy purity, and Thy consuming righteousness. Purge us, Lord. Burn away compromise, secret sin, coldness of heart, and divided loyalties. Let Thy fire fold inward upon every hidden place in us—every wound, every bitterness, every fear—until our hearts are healed and made clean. May Thy holy fire not destroy us, but sanctify us; not shame us, but free us; not merely frighten us, but form Christ within us.
Thy Word declares that “a brightness was about it.” Surround us with Thy light, Lord. Let Thy brightness expose what needs confession and illuminate what needs courage. When darkness presses in, when temptation whispers, when despair threatens, encircle us with the brightness of Thy presence. Make Thy people bright with truth, bright with mercy, bright with integrity, bright with love. Let our homes be filled with the brightness of prayer, our churches with the brightness of reverence, and our communities with the brightness of righteousness.
And Father, we behold the mystery and beauty: “out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.” Lord, from the very center of what seems overwhelming, reveal Thy glory. From the heart of trials, bring forth holy wisdom. From the midst of refining, bring forth a purified faith. From the midst of suffering, bring forth endurance, compassion, and a deeper knowledge of Thee. Teach us that the fire is not empty; it holds Thy purpose. Teach us that the storm is not pointless; it carries Thy presence. Teach us that the cloud is not abandonment; it is the veil of Thy majesty.
We pray for humility, that we would bow before Thee rather than contend with Thee. We pray for obedience, that we would respond to Thy call quickly and sincerely. We pray for discernment, that we would recognize Thy movement even when it comes in ways we did not expect. And we pray for hope, that we would not fear what Thou art doing, but trust that Thou art good, wise, and faithful.
Lord, make us a people who “look” and “behold” with spiritual eyes. Draw us into deeper worship, deeper repentance, deeper faith, and deeper love. Let Thy whirlwind remove what must be removed, let Thy cloud cover what must be covered, let Thy fire cleanse what must be cleansed, and let Thy brightness lead us into truth. And in all things, let the glory from “the midst of the fire” be our assurance that Thou art with us.
We ask these things with reverence, trusting Thy Word and Thy power, and seeking Thy face. Amen.

Ezequiel 1: 4. Olhei, e eis que um vento tempestuoso vinha do norte, uma grande nuvem, com um fogo revolvendo-se nela, e um resplendor ao redor, e no meio dela havia uma coisa, como de cor de âmbar, que saía do meio do fogo. 5.
