A Prayer of Courage and Admission

"But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter." - John 18:16

"But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter." - John 18:{verse.verse_number}

O Lord, our God, we come before You today in reverence and humility, reflecting on the powerful moments captured in John 18:16. In this scripture, we find the disciple Peter, standing outside the door, uncertain and fearful, while the other disciple—known to the high priest—steps forth to speak to the doorkeeper and brings Peter into the presence of the court. This image serves as a profound reminder of our human frailties and our need for courage in the face of adversity.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the courage displayed in that moment, when one disciple took the initiative to advocate for another. This act of kindness reminds us of the importance of community and support in our walk of faith. Help us, Lord, to be like that other disciple, always ready to reach out to those in need, to lift up our brothers and sisters who may be standing outside, feeling hesitant or unworthy. May we embody Your love and grace, guiding others to find acceptance in Your presence.

As Peter stood waiting, grappling with fear, anxiety, and perhaps doubt, we recognize his struggle as our own. We too stand outside doors—doors of opportunity, doors of new beginnings, and sometimes doors to difficult truths about ourselves or our faith. Lord, grant us the strength to enter these doors, even when they appear daunting; to face the uncertainties with faith and resolve, trusting that You will bring us through to the other side. The weight of fear can be a heavy burden, and we seek to cast that aside, believing in Your promises and Your power.

Almighty God, in those moments when we feel we must stand outside, may we remember that You are always near, waiting to bring us in. Let us be reminded of the deep love and compassion You have for each of us, just as You welcomed Peter despite his fear and impending failure. In this story, we see the fullness of Your mercy and the extent of Your grace, and we ask that You fill our hearts with the same mercy as we intercede for others.

As we contemplate Peter's position, we recognize that he later denied You. Yet, through the act of being brought in, he had a chance to witness, learn, and ultimately grow. Father, help us to hold space for growth, for our own lives and for those around us. Teach us to see failures not as endpoints but as powerful moments for transformation. When we stumble, remind us that forgiveness is not only possible but promised, and that our stories can continue to unfold with renewed purpose.

Lord, as we look towards the various doors in our lives, may we seek to be authentic in our faith. Allow us to embrace vulnerability and honesty, acknowledging our struggles openly, just as Peter had to confront his own. May we extend this authenticity to others, fostering an environment where acceptance reigns, and where our communities reflect Your love.

In a world full of judgments and barriers, help us to break down the walls that prevent access to Your grace. Let us be door-keepers of Your love, opening wide our hearts to all who seek solace in You. In our church, our neighborhoods, and our families, may we not only encourage those on the outside but actively seek ways to invite them in.

As I close this prayer, I pray for the courage to embrace the roles You place in our lives—the roles of advocates, supporters, and friends. May we always remember that You call us to step in, to stand together, and to lift one another up. We entrust our fears and our hopes to You, knowing that with every step towards the door, You walk alongside us, drawing close to our hearts.

In the name of Jesus, who embraces us all, we pray. Amen.
