The Call to Shepherd: A Prayer of Love and Commitment
“So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.” — John 21:15
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with hearts humbled and reverent, acknowledging Your great love and mercy that continually surround us. Lord, as we gather in Your presence, we reflect on the profound conversation between Jesus and Simon Peter as recorded in John 21:15. You asked, "Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?" With this question, Lord, You stirred powerful emotions within Peter's heart—a heart made raw by the weight of betrayal yet fiercely loyal and devoted to You.
God, we thank You for the relentless pursuit of our hearts. Just as You asked Peter for a declaration of love, we, too, hear Your voice calling us. We stand before You now, seeking to answer this critical question in our lives. In our busy lives, filled with so many distractions and temptations, help us to reflect honestly on our love for You. Do we love You more than the comforts of this world? Do we love You more than the possessions that may surround us? We ask for clarity in our hearts, and for a willingness to prioritize our relationship with You above all else.
Lord Jesus, we are reminded that Peter responded, "Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee." In our own moments of doubt and imperfection, we turn to You and confess that we love you. Teach us to express our love not just in words, but in actions—embodying Your teachings, reflecting Your grace, and sharing Your compassion in the world around us. Give us the hearts of true shepherds, equipped to nurture and care for those who are vulnerable and in need of Your love.
When You instructed Peter to "Feed my lambs," You entrusted him—and us—with a responsibility that goes beyond ourselves. Lord, we pray for a heart that loves Your flock as You do; a heart willing to serve, support, and guide those whom You bring into our lives. Help us to see the world through Your eyes, recognizing those who are overlooked, ignored, or suffering. Let our hands and feet be instruments of Your peace, kindness, and tenderness.
Father, in the wake of life’s challenges, give us the strength to lead those who are faltering or weak. Let us be advocates for justice, voices for the voiceless, and light in the darkness. We ask that You instill within us a burning passion to obey Your command—to feed Your lambs—not just by sharing bread but by sharing the Bread of Life, which is Jesus Christ. May our lives be living testimonies that proclaim Your love and good news to those around us.
Lord, remind us that feeding Your lambs is a continuous calling, one that requires patience, understanding, and unwavering love. May we be diligent in our commitments, choosing to lay down our own desires to lift up others. Let our love for You translate into a love for people, motivating us to act boldly in Your name.
And in our moments of weakness, when self-doubt clouds our judgment, and our fear seems insurmountable, may we cling tightly to the reassurance that You know our hearts. You understand the struggles that come with following You, and that our love, though imperfect, is enough to begin this beautiful journey of nurturing our brothers and sisters in faith.
As we close this prayer, may Your Spirit inspire us to never hesitate in answering Your call. May our spirits vibrate with the echo of Jesus’ words, reminding us of the love that binds us together and compels us to nurture and love each other in Your holy name. We are Yours, Lord, and we pledge to love You and to feed Your lambs.
In Jesus’ name, we pray,
Amen.
